Traditional method of the routine subculturing by transfer of fungal cultures from staled to fresh media is not a very practical means of storing large numbers of fungal cultures. It is time-consuming, prone to contamination, and does not prevent genetic and physiological changes. At present, besides freeze-drying (lyophilization), cryopreservation seems to be the best preservation technique av...

The diatoms discovered in the Polonnaruwa meteorite are interpreted as originating in comets and the dust in interstellar space. The exceptionally porous structure of the Polonnaruwa meteorite points to it being a recently denuded cometary fragment. Microorganisms that were present in a freeze-dried state within pores and cavities may have survived entry to be added to the terrestrial biosphere.

1. Lipoprotein B from female Lp(a)-lipoprotein-negative serum was isolated from the fraction of density 1.073-1.125 by using immunoadsorbent; 2.5mg of freeze-dried material was obtained from 100ml of serum from a fasting patient. 2. The hydrated density of this lipoprotein was found to be 1.084g/cm(3). A flotation rate F(1.200) of 9.4 and lipid/protein ratio 1.40 were found, similar to that of ...

The production of Lactobacillus brevis has been improved by changing the medium composition and the physiological conditions. The cellular concentration reaches 8.2 x 10(10) cells/mL in 21 h with a fed-batch technique in MRS medium. Freeze-drying has been used as technology for drying the cells and survival rates have been improved with different additives such as glycerol, CaCO3, and skimmed-m...

Although lyophilization reduces the bacterial population in plasma, some species survive for several months. Sensitivity or resistance to lyophilization in plasma is a characteristic of each morphological type, with gram-negative species being more sensitive to destruction than cocci or sporulating gram-positive species. Reconstituted preparations of lyophilized plasma must be incubated for 24 ...

The aim of the present research was to evaluate bovine muscles to be subjected to freeze-drying for an instant meal. Physicochemical and senescence parameters were evaluated. The experimental part was divided into two steps. In the first step, the Semitendinosus muscle was chosen to establish methodology and experimental conditions. Physicochemical, microstructure and senescence parameters were...

The XYZ factors have been prepared from tumor cells by keeping the tumor tissue frozen for a period of 10 days or longer, either by anaero bic storage (4, 8, 22) or by prolonged desiccation (lyophilization) (4, 24, 25). Ordinarily, tumor cells are killed by this treatment, although the presence of viable tumor cells does not neutralize or dimin ish the XYZ effect (4, 9, 16, 17). Furthermore, tu...

Watary extract of ALLIUM SATIVUM when administered Intravenously (I.V.) to NORMOTENSIVE dogs, produced a significant fall in their mean blood pressure. This effect was not antagonized by atropine or antihistamines. The extract increased the activity of Isolated Guinea Pig Ileum preparation. This effect of A Sativum was blocked by Diamentane (JPMA 31:12, 1981).
