OBJECTIVE To check knowledge of undergraduate dental students to make diagnosis of dental fluorosis with varying degrees of severity and choose its appropriate treatment. METHODS Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire addressing knowledge of undergraduates based on ten images of mouths presenting enamel changes. RESULTS Only three images were correctly diagnosed by most u...
1. Calcium turnover was determined after intravenous injection of radioactive 47Ca in patients with fluorosis and endemic genu valgum and in age-matched controls. Total Ca turnover in the body, loss of Ca from the body in urine, faeces and sweat (external turnover) and bone mineralization rate were calculated from whole-body retention of 47Ca and specific activity of 47Ca in serum. 2. Total Ca ...
Hypoparathyroidism and fluorosis are two distinct sclerotic bone diseases. Both have high BMD but they behave differently. Fluorosis causes secondary hyperparathyroidism and has been reported to cause renal dysfunction. Here we discuss a case that coincidentally had both the disorders and their interaction.

BACKGROUND To determine if a novel dual camera imaging system employing both polarized white light (PWL) and quantitative light induced fluorescence imaging (QLF) is appropriate for measuring enamel fluorosis in an epidemiological setting. The use of remote and objective scoring systems is of importance in fluorosis assessments due to the potential risk of examiner bias using clinical methods. ...
The aim of the present study was to compare the values of the Thylstrup & Fejerskov Index (TF index) for the determination of the prevalence of dental fluorosis using either all teeth (gold standard) or six upper anterior teeth (simplified TF index). The sample was made up of 396 individuals aged six to 22 years from three Brazilian cities with endemic fluorosis caused by the ingestion of water...
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the putative association between the presence of the COL1A2 gene A/C polymorphism and the severity of dental fluorosis in a sample exposed to high concentrations of fluoride. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out that included 80 children residing in a community with high concentrations of fluoride in the drinking water. To determine ...
The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of chronic fluorosis on apoptosis and the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in the cerebral cortices of rats in an attempt to elucidate molecular mechanisms. Sixty Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were divided randomly into three groups of 20 each: an untreated control group (drinking water naturally containing <0.5 mg fluoride/L), a low-fluoride (F) grou...
Seven hundred eight patients aged 5-19 years in a pediatric practice in North Carolina were selected using a random-start, systematic sampling procedure and enrolled in a case control study to determine risks for fluorosis. Subjects were examined by four trained examiners using the Tooth Surface Index of Fluorosis (TSIF). Information on fluoride exposures and other explanatory variables was obt...
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate caries and dental fluorosis among Mexican preschoolers and school-aged children in a non-endemic zone for fluorosis and to measure its biological indicators. METHODS DMFT, DMFS, dmft, dmfs, and CDI indexes were applied. Fluoride urinary excretion and fluoride concentrations in home water, table salt, bottled water, bottled drinks, and toothp...
