ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new valveless pump using a PZT diaphragm to create a gas jet flow for fluidic applications. The pump was designed and simulated based on transient fluidic analysis with experimental result of PZT diaphragm so that the features of micropump are reliably predicted. The experimental results of a PMMA prototype confirmed the performance of the pump. The fabrication pr...

-----------------Four extracorporeal blood flow measurement devices were compared for accuracy: the digital display (Stockert-Shiley roller pump), the Sarns doppler flow probe, the Transonic ultrasonic flow probe and the Biomedicus electromagnetic flow probe. The effects of changing temperature and hematocrit at various flows were compared. Eighty-four blood flow measurements were recorded for ...

OBJECTIVE The intra-aortic balloon pump is the most widely used form of temporary cardiac assist and often utilised in patients before and after cardiac surgery. Several effects of balloon counter-pulsation have been reported previously, but its effect on left ventricular diastolic function has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the intra-aortic ...

This paper deals with pump as turbine (PAT) as a feasible solution to the energy problems in rural and hilly areas. PAT provides an economical alternative to actual turbines especially for pico and microhydropower generation. PAT is essentially a pump operating in turbine mode by changing direction of flow and hence the direction of rotation of the impeller. In the forthcoming discussion, an in...

Pump thrombosis is a serious complication of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). Treatment options include medical thrombolysis, surgical pump exchange or urgent heart transplantation. We are reporting a case of pump thrombosis with active hemolysis and acute renal failure managed surgically by isolating the LVAD while awaiting renal recovery and donor heart availability.

BACKGROUND The latest generation of left ventricular assist devices consists of nonpulsatile impeller pumps. In these small pumps, thrombus formation inside the device does not lead to thromboembolic end-organ dysfunction but may dramatically impair pump flow. We report on our experience with thrombus-related pump dysfunctions of the MicroMed DeBakey left ventricular assist device and its treat...

BACKGROUND Published studies of the past decades have established that mass transfer across the dialyzer membrane is governed by diffusion, convection and osmosis. While the former is independent of the pressure in the liquids, the latter two are pressure dependent and are enhanced when the pressure difference across the membrane is increased. The goal of the present study is to examine the imp...

A simple two-pump model has served to describe the mechanics of ventilation in cartilaginous and bony fishes since the pioneering work of G. M. Hughes. A hallmark of this model is that water flow over the gills is continuous. Studies of feeding kinematics in the swellshark Cephaloscyllium ventriosum, however, suggested that a flow reversal occurred during prey capture and transport. Given that ...

Pump induced hemolysis is presently evaluated by measuring plasma free hemoglobin (fHb). However, this method has disadvantages because quantification of fHb depends on hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels. The aim of this work was to devise a hemoglobin independent method, capable of quantifying cell trauma directly by measuring the number of red blood cell (RBC) fragments. Whole blood ...
