Solanum anomalum Thonn. ex Schumach. (family Solanaceae), an edible shrub whose fruits and leaves are used medicinally to treat diseases including diabetes was evaluated for effect on alpha amylase glucosidase enzymes in vivo. The leaf extract (70-210 mg/kg) fractions (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol, 140 of S. were vivo inhibitory using starch, sucrose maltose as substrates. A...

Borreria vertcillata is a woody perennial shrub with false-button weedy herb belonging to the family (Rubiaceae), used for treating/curing various forms of diseases across world since ancient times. Qualitative phytochemical screening pulverized whole plant was carried out using four different solvent extracts (N-hexane, chloroform, ethyl-acetate and methanol). The phytochemicals screeened cont...

The purpose of this study was to determine antibacterial activity of the marine algae. Different algae were subjected to the three solvents (n-hexan, ethyl acetate, methanol). Antibacterial activity of the extracts was performed using 7 bacterias by disc diffusion method.According to the results of the study, the algae Ulvalinza and Ulvaintestinalis had the highest antibacterial effect against ...

Filtrates of Fusarium sambucinum NRRL 13495 grown in a stagnant culture for 9 days contained up to 458 +/- 60 (mean +/- standard error; n = 3) mg of 4,15-diacetoxyscirpenol per liter depending on culture conditions. Extraction with ethyl acetate, chromatography on a column of silica gel, and crystallization from mixtures of ethyl acetate and hexane provided pure material in 96% yield.

The distinctive flavor of wine, brandy, and other grape-derived alcoholic beverages is affected by many compounds, including esters produced during alcoholic fermentation. The characteristic fruity odors of the fermentation bouquet are primarily due to a mixture of hexyl acetate, ethyl caproate (apple-like aroma), iso-amyl acetate (banana-like aroma), ethyl caprylate (apple-like aroma), and 2-p...

Olive mill wastewaters (OMW) are rich in water-soluble polyphenolic compounds that show remarkable antioxidant properties. In this work, the recovery yield of compounds, such as hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, as well as total phenols (TPh) from real OMW was investigated. Antioxidants were recovered by means of liquid-liquid solvent extraction. For this purpose, a laboratory-scale pilot unit was es...

Helicobacter pylori is a major risk factor for gastritis, ulcers and gastric cancer. This study was aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of the stem bark of Bridelia. micrantha on H. pylori isolated in South Africa. Extracts and clarithromycin were tested against 31 clinical strains, including a standard strain (NCTC 11638) of H. pylori, by measuring the diameters of the corresponding ...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Mosquitoes transmit serious human diseases, causing millions of deaths every year and the development of resistance to chemical insecticides resulting in rebounding vectorial capacity. Plants may be alternative sources of mosquito control agents. The present study assessed the role of larvicidal activities of hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone, and methanol dried...

BACKGROUND Hoodia gordonii products are widely commercialized for anti-obesity purposes; however, minimal research is available on the other health properties demonstrated by this popular herbal plant. METHODS H. gordonii crude extracts (ethanol and ethyl acetate) were assayed for in vitro anti-HIV-1 protease (PR), reverse transcriptase (RT) and integrase activity. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhy...

Leaf extracts of Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) and bulb extracts of Allium sativum (garlic) extracted with various solvents (ethanol, ethyl acetate and aqueous for Cymbopogon citratus, and ethyl acetate chloroform and aqueous for Allium sativum) were evaluated for antidermatophytic activity against Microsporum spp. isolated from different water samples. Out of a total of 60 water samples an...
