The utilisation of emotional information in computer systems that interact with humans has become more prevalent during the last few years. The various channels through which emotions are expressed provide valuable information about the way humans think and behave and have been successfully employed to assist the inference mechanism of interactive computer applications. In this paper a novel ap...

It has been discovered about a decade ago that autistic children cannot reason properly about mental states and mental actions of themselves and others (Baron-Cohen 1988, Leslie 1987). In particular, autistic patients demonstrate the lack of perceiving the emotions of themselves and others as well as the reduced emotional behavior. We extend the psychological observations and the " theory of mi...

A framework for generating facial expressions from emotional states in daily conversation is described. It provides a mapping between emotional states and facial expressions, where the former is represented by vectors with psychologically-defined abstract dimensions, and the latter is coded by the Facial Action Coding System. In order to obtain the mapping, parallel data with rated emotional st...

Emotional states of consciousness, or what are typically called emotional feelings, are traditionally viewed as being innately programmed in subcortical areas of the brain, and are often treated as different from cognitive states of consciousness, such as those related to the perception of external stimuli. We argue that conscious experiences, regardless of their content, arise from one system ...

In a natural conversation, a complete emotional expression is typically composed of a complex temporal course representing temporal phases of onset, apex, and offset. In this study, subemotional states are defined to model the temporal course of an emotional expression in natural conversation. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are adopted to characterize the subemotional states; each represents one t...

Embodied theories of mind tend to be theories of the cognitive half of the mind and to ignore its emotional half while a complete theory of the mind should account for both halves. Robots are a new way of expressing theories of the mind which are less ambiguous and more capable to generate specific and non-controversial predictions than verbally expressed theories. We outline a simple robotic m...

The automatic detection of human emotional states has been of great interest lately for its applications not only in the Human-Computer Interaction field, but also for its applications in psychological studies. Using an emotion elicitation paradigm, we investigate whether eye activity holds discriminative power for detecting affective states. Our emotion elicitation paradigm includes induced em...

Human tutors detect and respond to student emotional states, but current machine tutors do not. Our preliminary machine learning experiments involving transcription, emotion annotation and automatic feature extraction from our human-human spoken tutoring corpus indicate that the spoken tutoring system we are developing can be enhanced to automatically predict and adapt to student emotional states.
