The elemental sulfur formation by the partial oxidation of thiosulfate by both a sulfoxidizing consortium and by Thiobacillus thioparus ATCC 23645 was studied under aerobic conditions in chemostat. Steady state was attained with essentially total conversion to sulfate when the dissolved oxygen concentration was 5 mgO2 l(-1) and below a dilution rate (D) of 3.0 d(-1)for the consortium and 0.9 d(...

The treatment of synthetic acid mine drainage (AMD) water (pH 3.0-6.5) containing sulfate (3.0-3.5 g L(-1)) and various metals (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) was studied in an ethanol-fed sulfate-reducing 4-compartment anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) at 32°C. The reactor was operated for 160 days at different chemical oxygen demand (COD)/sulfate ratios, hydraulic retention times (HRT), pH, and me...

This paper provides an overview of materials’ performance in well environments containing H2S and elemental sulphur (S). Based on this information the factors affecting the service life of materials used for well completion and surface facilities in highly sour environments are discussed and limitations on materials selection and chemical inhibition procedures are suggested.

Herein we report a route to sulfur–starch composites by the modification of corn starch with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) and its subsequent reaction elemental sulfur generate OSSx (where x = wt% sulfur, either 90 or 95).

Current state-of-the-art epitaxial growth techniques employ various metalorganic and hydride gases to deliver constituent species to the substrate surface, particularly high vapor pressure species such as phosphorus and sulfur. Gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) utilizes hydride gas sources and solid elemental sources. The more conventional growth approach, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), ...

AIMS To evaluate the contribution of oxygen transfer and consumption in a sulfoxidizing system to increase the elemental sulfur yield from thiosulfate oxidation. METHODS AND RESULTS A 10 l thiosulfate oxidizing bioreactor with suspended cells operating under microaerophilic conditions and a separated aerator with a variable volume of 0.8--1.7 l were operated with a consortium containing mainl...

The biological oxidation of ferrous to ferric ion by iron oxidizing bacteria is potentially a useful industrial process for the removal of H2S from industrial gases, desulphurization of coal, and removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gas. In the bioprocess of H2S removal an aqueous Fe2(SO4)3 solution is used as an absorbent. H2S is absorbed and oxidized to elemental sulfur. At the same time, Fe i...

Mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (S MIF) in Archean and Paleoproterozoic rocks provides strong evidence for an anoxic atmosphere before ~2,400 Ma. However, the origin of this isotopic anomaly remains unclear, as does the identity of the molecules that carried it from the atmosphere to Earth's surface. Irrespective of the origin of S MIF, processes in the biogeochemical sulfur c...
