The size-effect, two-parameter, and fictitious crack models were developed to predict crack growth in materials like concrete that experience tension softening. The three models must predict the same response for infinitely large structures. Therefore, this study evaluates the differences in response for smaller structures. The metric used to compare response is the fracture toughness value req...

In this paper, the effect of interference fit on fatigue life of holed plate of mechanical joints was investigated experimentally. Fatigue tests were carried out on the holed specimens of Al-alloy 7075-T6 alloy. The interference fit process consists of force fitting a fastener into the hole with a negative clearance (diameter of the fastener is larger than of the hole) that produces beneficial ...

Three-dimensional enriched finite elements are used to compute mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) for three-dimensional cracks in elastic functionally graded materials (FGMs) that are subject to general mixed-mode loading. The method, which advantageously does not require special mesh configuration/modifications and post-processing of finite element results, is an enhancement of previou...

In this paper we analyze the numerical solution by a collocation method of a hypersingular integral equation resulting from the boundary value problem related to an infinite strip containing an edge crack perpendicular to its boundaries. Moreover, we show convergence results as well as numerical tests in a case of interest in fracture mechanics.

By a combination of geometrical and configurational analysis we study the properties of absolute minimal and equilibrium states of general Mumford-Shah functionals, with applications to models of quasistatic brittle fracture propagation. The main results concern the mathematical relations between physical quantities as energy release rate and energy concentration for 3D cracks with complex shap...

Sol–gel Ru0.3Sn0.7O2 electrode coatings with crack-free and mud-crack surface morphology deposited onto a Ti-substrate are prepared for a comparative investigation of the microstructural effect on the electrochemical activity for Cl2 production and the Cl2 bubble evolution behaviour. For comparison, a state-of-the-art mud-crack commercial Ru0.3Ti0.7O2 coating is used. The compact coating is pot...

ÐBy incorporating the e€ects of interfacial adhesion in the mechanics of rounded contact between two bodies, a new approach is proposed for the quantitative analysis of a wide variety of contact fatigue situations involving cyclic normal, tangential or torsional loading. In this method, conditions of ``strong'' and ``weak'' adhesion are identi®ed by relating contact mechanics and fracture mecha...

Finite element analysis procedures are utilized to provide theoretical calibration curves for the electrical potential crack-monitoring system as applied to single-edge-notch (SEN) and compact tension (CT) fracture specimens. The results are compared to existing calibrations for such test piece geometries derived using experimental, electrical analog and analytical (conformal mapping) procedures.

A closed-form solution is obtained for the interfacial edge crack between two bonded dissimilar orthotropic strips loaded by antiplane point loading in form of screw dislocation or line force. Conformal mapping and existing dislocation solutions are utilized for constructing the fundamental solution of the problem. The stress intensity factor (SIF) and the energy release rate (ERR) are obtained...
