The ability of Gaussian noise to induce ordered states in dynamical systems is here presented in an overview of the main stochastic mechanisms able to generate spatial patterns. These mechanisms involve: (i) a deterministic local dynamics term, accounting for the local rate of variation of the field variable, (ii) a noise component (additive or multiplicative) accounting for the unavoidable env...

The genetic transformation of plants mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens represents an essential tool for both fundamental and applied research in plant biology. For a successful infection, culminating in the integration of its transferred DNA (T-DNA) into the host genome, Agrobacterium relies on multiple interactions with host-plant factors. Extensive studies have unraveled many of such inte...

The fungal genus Alternaria contains many destructive plant pathogens, including Alternaria brassicicola, which causes black spot disease on a wide range of Brassicaceae plants and which is routinely used as a model necrotrophic pathogen in studies with Arabidopsis thaliana. During host infection, many fungal proteins that are critical for disease progression are processed in the endoplasmic re...

Localized ecological interactions can generate striking large-scale spatial patterns in ecosystems through spatial self-organization. Possible mechanisms include oscillating consumer-resource interactions, localized disturbance-recovery processes and scale-dependent feedback. Despite abundant theoretical literature, studies revealing spatial self-organization in real ecosystems are limited. Rec...

Rabbit antibody to cutinase-I, isolated from Fusarium solani f. pisi, was conjugated to ferritin. With this ferritin-conjugated antibody it was shown that germinating spores of this fungus excreted cutinase during the penetration of the host pisum sativum. This result constitutes the most specific and strongest evidence for an enzymic penetration of a plant cuticle by a pathogen during infection.

Plant-parasitic cyst nematodes infect plants and form highly sophisticated feeding sites in roots. It is not known which plant cell signalling mechanisms trigger plant defence during the early stages of nematode parasitism. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are central components of protein phosphorylation cascades transducing extracellular signals to plant defence responses. MAPK phosp...

Viral infections usually take place in an orderly manner and can be divided into at least two phases: an early and a late stage. In geminiviruses, plant viruses with a circular, single-stranded DNA genome, expression of viral genes involves complex regulation strategies that suggest the existence of a pattern of temporal gene expression. In this work, the transcription of pepper huasteco yellow...

the stripe (yellow) rust in wheat is one of the most important plant diseases in iran. since 1993 several epidemics have occurred in iran causing the breakdown of widely util-ized sources of resistance in wheat cultivars. twenty-seven pathotypes were identified during 2003 and 2004 in greenhouse tests. pathotypes 6e6a+, 6e22a+, 6e130a+, 6e134a+, 6e142a+, 6e158a+, 134e130a+ and 134e142a+ were mo...

The geminivirus protein AL1 initiates viral DNA replication, regulates its own expression, and induces plant gene transcription. To better understand how AL1 interacts with host proteins during these processes, we used yeast two-hybrid library screening and a baculovirus protein interaction system to identify plant proteins that interact with AL1. These studies identified a Ser/Thr kinase, a ki...

Flavonoids are crucial signaling molecules in the symbiosis between legumes and their nitrogen-fixing symbionts, the rhizobia. The primary function of flavonoids in the interaction is to induce transcription of the genes for biosynthesis of the rhizobial signaling molecules called Nod factors, which are perceived by the plant to allow symbiotic infection of the root. Many legumes produce specif...
