Seed lots with the genetic background of ‘Baroda’ and ‘Marketer’ cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) containing all possible combinations (DF Df, Dfdf, dfdf) of df (which increases dormancy) and Df (wild type) were used. Dormancy was not solely due to the genotype dfdf and clear effects of genetic background were apparent. The df allele in the homozygous state induced a strong dormancy in ‘Baroda’, b...

Seed quality is crucial for achieving the desired number of plants in mixture, as well ratio grass-legume components. Seeds red clover and Italian ryegrass can be placed on market with germination 70 % more. In this experiment, seeds six varieties four lily were examined. up to years age tested. was examined by monitoring following parameters: energy, amount hard-dormant seed, total abnormal se...

Plant seeds will not germinate when in a dormant state. What then are the factors controlling dormancy? A recent study has uncovered two basic-helix-loop-helix proteins which repress germination and are critical for maintaining dormancy. The combined action of light and cold synergistically alleviates activity of these repressors thus stimulating germination.

An enzymatically active recombinant protein kinase, previously isolated and characterized in Fagus sylvatica L. dormant seeds (FsPK1), was used to obtain a specific polyclonal antibody against this protein. Immunoblotting and immunohistochemical analysis of FsPK1 protein in beech seeds showed a strong immunostaining in the nucleus of the cells located in the vascular tissue of the embryonic axi...

Radicles (1 mm long) of pea embryo axes, excised from dormant seeds and from seeds soaked for 80 min, 8, 12, and 48 hr, were fixed in glutaraldehyde and postfixed in OsO(4). The nucleus was only slightly changed by 48 hr soaking, but cytoplasmic organelles underwent developmental changes. There was proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum, the appearance of dictyosomes, and an inward migration of...

Dormancy breaking and germination requirements were determined for seeds of the eastern North American (eNA) species Sanicula canadensis, Sanicula gregaria and Sanicula trifoliata, and the data compared to those available for the European–Asian (EurA) congener Sanicula europaea. Seeds of the three eNA species had underdeveloped embryos that were physiologically dormant, i.e., morphophysiologica...

Seed dormancy is an adaptive mechanism and an important agronomic trait. Temperature during seed development strongly affects seed dormancy in wheat (Triticum aestivum) with lower temperatures producing higher levels of seed dormancy. To identify genes important for seed dormancy, we used a wheat microarray to analyze gene expression in embryos from mature seeds grown at lower and higher temper...

BACKGROUND Plants integrate signals from the environment and use these to modify the timing of development according to seasonal cues. Seed germination is a key example of this phenomenon and in Arabidopsis is promoted by the synergistic interaction of light and low temperatures in dormant seeds. This signaling pathway is known to converge on the regulation of the gibberellin (GA) biosynthetic ...
