This paper investigates the optimized parameters for the tuned liquid column dampers to decrease the earthquake vibrations of high-rise buildings. Considering soil effects, the soilstructure interaction (SSI) is involved in this model. The Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is also utilized on the roof of the building. Since the TLCD is a nonlinear device, the time domain analysis based on nonli...

A Bayesian statistics approach is applied in the seismogenic sources of Greece and the surrounding area in order to assess seismic hazard, assuming that the earthquake occurrence follows the Poisson process. The Bayesian approach applied supplies the probability that a certain cut-off magnitude of Ms = 6.0 will be exceeded in time intervals of 10, 20 and 75 years. We also produced graphs which ...

In this, the second of a two-part paper, the analysis of the apparent frequency of a seven-story reinforced-concrete hotel building in Van Nuys, Calif., is extended to consider its time-dependent changes, both short and long term. The instantaneous apparent frequency is measured by two methods: windowed Fourier analysis and zero-crossings analysis. The results show that it changes from earthqua...

This paper examines the earthquake resistant design and construction practices prevailing in India. Results of a set of studies conducted to estimate the seismic performance of Indian housing stock, are presented. A field survey was conducted in the National Capital Region to assess the expected seismic performance of multistorey buildings, as these are so-called ‘engineered’ buildings and the ...

Motivation: Reinforced concrete structures, RCS, are strongly heterogeneous composites, the performance of which depends on the subtle interaction of the brittle concrete and the ductile reinforcement. Under extreme seismic events, the interplay between the two components is critical for the safety and survival of RCS as demonstrated by dramatic failures during recent earthquake disasters in Tu...

OBJECTIVE To chart emergency department (ED) attendance and acute admission following a devastating earthquake in 2011 which lead to Canterbury's rapidly accelerated integrated health system transformations. DESIGN Interrupted time series analysis, modelling using Bayesian change-point methods, of ED attendance and acute admission rates over the 2008-2014 period. SETTING ED department withi...

Catastrophe models capable of rapid data ingestion, loss estimation and visualization are required for postevent analysis of catastrophic events such as earthquakes. This paper describes the design and development of the Automated Post-Event Earthquake Loss Estimation and Visualization (APE-ELEV) system for real-time estimation and visualization of losses incurred due to earthquakes. A model fo...

BACKGROUND The Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami and nuclear disaster on 11 March 2011 had a short-term influence on the increase in emergency department visits and hospital admissions due to various diseases. However, it remains unclear whether the earthquake and tsunami disaster affected the long-term health conditions of people in the affected areas. METHODS Using a nation...

Experience of the March 11 2011, Great Tohoku earthquake clearly demonstrated that the earthquakes might be the dominating contributors to the overall risk of nuclear power plants (Institute of Nuclear Power Operations [INPO], 2011); International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], 2007). The seismic probabilistic safety assessments of several nuclear power plants also provided similar results. On th...

This paper reports on the damage of Wushi bridge in a recent Taiwan 921 earthquake. Damage to Wushi bridge appeared in the superstructure, the substructure and the approaches. Typical types of damage are discussed and illustrated in this paper. A review of the bridge design specifications in Taiwan is also presented to give the background on the seismic design of Taiwan highway bridges.
