A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the rapid detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV) was developed and evaluated. The LAMP assay specifically amplified only CMV DNA, and no cross-reactivity with the DNA of herpes simplex virus type 1, varicella-zoster virus, adenovirus, Aspergillus flavus, or Staphylococcus aureus was observed. The sequences of the LAMP assay-positive CMV prod...

PURPOSE To describe the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis with intravitreal sustain-release ganciclovir devices in a 16-year-old patient in third remission of acute lymphoblastic leukemia after stem cell transplantation. METHODS The patient received a stem cell transplant from an unrelated bone marrow donor after which he contracted a serious CMV infection manifested in the lungs a...

The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and complications of the use of an intraocular sustained-release ganciclovir implant for the treatment of active cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in AIDS patients. Thirty-nine eyes of 26 patients were submitted to ocular surgery. All patients underwent complete ocular examination before and after surgery. The surgical procedure...

To the Editors: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is a blinding opportunistic infection that primarily affects people with AIDS in resource-limited settings. Screening for CMV retinitis is important because the infection can cause irreversible retinal destruction before the onset of visual symptoms. Routine screening is recommended for patients with CD4 counts less than 100 cells per microliter a...

BACKGROUND Five of 7 (71%) elderly immunocompetent patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis had retinal arteriolar occlusions versus 2 of 8 (25%) elderly immunocompromised patients and 1 of 19 (5%) younger HIV-infected patients. Compared to HIV-infected patients, elderly patients were more likely to have occlusive events, neovascularization or hemorrhage, and underlying vasculopathy. The purpose...

A case is reported of a 35-year-old male with established acquired immune deficiency syndrome who developed cytomegalovirus retinitis. When intravenous treatment with ganciclovir had to be withdrawn because of toxicity, one eye was treated successfully by intravitreal injections of the drug. After 15 weeks of intravitreal treatment this eye developed endophthalmitis.

HIV related cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease results from reactivation of latent infection when the CD4 count falls below 100 cells ×10/l. Before the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) up to 40% of HIV infected patients developed CMV disease, predominantly retinitis. Early diagnosis of retinitis may result in a better response to therapy and reduced loss of vision. As ret...

The suppression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication and elevation in CD4 cells observed with protease inhibitor combination regimens known as HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) may allow AIDS patients to undergo an immune recovery that allows them to suppress the progression of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. Eleven AIDS patients receiving HAART with healed CMV retiniti...

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of UL97 resistance mutations in cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA amplified from the eyes of patients with AIDS and newly diagnosed CMV retinitis. Relevant segments of the CMV UL97 gene were amplified from vitreous humor, after which restriction digest screening was performed for resistance mutations at codons 460, 520, 591, 592, 594, 595, and 6...
