AIMS/BACKGROUND Keratoconus is generally held to be an absolute contraindication for photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Corneas with inferior steepening on corneal topography are widely thought to have subclinical keratoconus. We were not convinced that this is always the case, as there seems to be a group of patients with a stable inferior steepening pattern on topography who show no other cha...

Purpose: To search evidence and determine whether PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy) or LASIK (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis) produce a better outcome of laser vision correction for patients with atypical topography of cornea. Setting: Electronic search of laser vision correction related studies on Cochrane Library, Medline and PubMed. Method: The search was conducted over Cochrane Library, Emba...

PURPOSE To compare quality of life (QOL) in myopic patients who underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with that of myopic spectacle or contact lens users. METHODS This observational comparative study was performed on 102 low to moderate myopic patients who had undergone PRK at least 6 months ago and 106 myopic spectacle or contact lens wearers. Vision related QOL and its correlation wit...

AIMS To further understand the morphological and functional recovery of corneal epithelium following excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS The right eyes (group 1) of 15 male, New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2-3 kg underwent PRK. The left eye of each rabbit (group 2) underwent simple mechanical de-epithelialisation and were examined as treated controls. Both eyes of anot...

INTRODUCTION The field of refractive surgery continues to evolve amid continued concerns as to which surgical technique minimizes the risk of inducing ectasia. PURPOSE To compare clinical outcomes between PRK, LASEK and Epi-LASIK in moderately to highly myopic eyes (-4.00 D to -8.00 D). MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective chart review of 100 PRK eyes, 100 LASEK eyes (with alcohol) and 97 ...

PURPOSE To describe the preparation and thickness profiles of endothelial keratoplasty lenticules harvested from eyes with previous photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS Donor whole eyes that underwent PRK were subjected to microkeratome-assisted dissection for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty. Specular microscopy and Visante optical coherence tomography were perform...

PURPOSE Stereopsis, as a part of visual function, is the ability of differentiating between the two eyes' views (binocular disparity), due to the eyes' different positions. The aim of this study was to compare stereoscopic vision before and after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in myopia. METHODS In a prospective interventional case series study clinical trial, forty-eight myopic individual...

PURPOSE To assess the effectiveness, safety, and comfort of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) using the Amaris laser platform. SETTING Ophthalmic Consultants of Beirut, Jal-El-Dib, Metn, Lebanon. DESIGN Comparative case series. METHODS Myopic eyes with or without astigmatism were treated by transepithelial PRK (study group) and compared with variable-adjusted eyes treated ...

This study describes a case of nodular epithelial hyperplasia and stromal alterations in a patient with keratoconus who was submitted to topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) followed by corneal collagen cross-linking. Debridement of the epithelial nodule was performed. After a 2-year followup, a new topography-guided PRK was indicated.
