We studied the restriction fragment length polymorphism of the rRNA gene and CTX genetic element in Vibrio cholerae O139 Bengal, which resurged in Calcutta in September 1996 after a gap of 32 months. While the strains from this resurgence were indistinguishable from the earlier strains by ribotyping, the structure of the CTX genetic element present in the current O139 strains was found to be un...
Vibrio vulnificus, which is, like Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a pathogen of humankind, is a Gram-negative, curved, motile, and rod-shaped bacterium [corrected] Here, we present the draft genome sequence of the type strain, ATCC 27562, which was the first isolated Vibrio vulnificus strain.
We report the draft genome sequencing of five Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor clinical isolates collected in the Russian Federation from imported cholera cases in 2006, 2010, and 2012. In the initial phylogenetic analysis, one isolate clustered with the Haiti/Nepal-4 group.
We evaluated the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MS) for the identification of Vibrio cholerae. MS identified all 42 isolates of V. cholerae O1 and O139 and 7 of 9 non-O1/O139 isolates. MS correctly discriminated between all Aeromonas and V. cholerae isolates. Overall, MS performed as well as or better than biochemical methods.
One of the major pathogenic determinants of Vibrio cholerae, the cholera toxin, is encoded in the genome of a filamentous phage, CTXφ. CTXφ makes use of the chromosome dimer resolution system of V. cholerae to integrate its single stranded genome into one, the other, or both V. cholerae chromosomes. Here, we review current knowledge about this smart integration process.
In the Vibrio cholerae pathogen, initiation of bacterial quorum sensing pathways serves to suppress virulence. We describe herein a potent and chemically stable small molecule agonist of V. cholerae quorum sensing, which was identified through rational drug design based on the native quorum sensing signal. This novel agonist may serve as a useful lead compound for the control of virulence in V....
Currently, Bangladesh is experiencing an epidemic of acute watery diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholerae O139. Surface waters were collected and cultured for vibrious following enrichment. Twelve percent (11 of 92) of samples yielded V. cholerae O139, and all of them were positive for cholera toxin. The data suggest that V. cholerae O139 is easily culturable from surface water samples.
BACKGROUND The continuous emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria drastically reduced the efficacy of our antibiotic armory and consequently, increased the frequency of therapeutic failure. The search for bioactive constituents from endophytic fungi against MDR bacteria became a necessity for alternative and promising strategies, and for the development of novel therapeutic solutions. W...
We determined the frequency of multidrug resistant (MDR) infections with Shigella spp. and Vibrio cholerae O1 at an urban (Dhaka) and rural (Matlab) hospital in Bangladesh. We also compared sociodemographic and clinical features of patients with MDR infections to those with antibiotic-susceptible infections at both sites. Analyses were conducted using surveillance data from the International Ce...
Problem statement: Food borne illness occurs all over the world. Vibrio cholerae is the etiological agent of cholera which is spread by contaminated food, water or direct fecal contact with food handlers. There are also examples of sporadic outbreaks of illness attributed to raw products eaten unprocessed. Consequently, there was a widespread concern that food in international trade carries pat...
