Copper oxide supported on ceria has been investigated for the selective hydrogenation of octadecanoic acid to octadecanol. At reaction conditions of 5 bar H2 at 250 C, 75 % alcohol yield with 100 % selectivity can be achieved. The Cu species formed under the experimental conditions and ceria support likely show synergy for the selective hydrogenation of acids into alcohols.

Enzyme mechanisms are often probed by structure-informed point mutations and measurement of their effects on enzymatic properties to test mechanistic hypotheses. In many cases, the challenge is to report on complex, often inter-linked elements of catalysis. Evidence for long-range effects on enzyme mechanism resulting from mutations remains sparse, limiting the design/redesign of synthetic cata...

A Cu-catalyzed tandem dehydrogenation/dehalogenation sequential reaction along with N-arylation has been developed for the synthesis of pyridazinone derivatives in an aerobic and aqueous environment. To achieve the transformation of three chemical bonds in a one-pot reaction, a multifunctional copper catalyst was used which afforded excellent activity, high selectivity, and recyclability. The c...

Nanoporous metals show promising performances in electrochemical catalysis. In this paper, we report a self-supporting bimetallic porous heterogeneous indium/copper structure synthesized with eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) material on copper substrate. This nanoporous copper-indium heterostructure catalyst exhibits excellent performance the reduction of carbon dioxide to syngas. The ratio H2/C...

For chemical reactions in liquid state, such as catalysis, understanding of dynamical changes is conducive to practical applications. Solvation of copper salts in aqueous solution has implications for life, the environment, and industry. In an ongoing research, the question arises that why the color of aqueous CuCl2 solution changes with solution concentration? In this work, we have developed a...

The electrochemical conversion of CO2 and H2O into syngas using renewably generated electricity is an attractive approach to simultaneously achieve chemical fixation of CO2 and storage of renewable energy. Developing cost-effective catalysts for selective electroreduction of CO2 into CO is essential to the practical applications of the approach. We report a simple synthetic strategy for the pre...

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are a class of copper-containing enzymes that oxidatively degrade insoluble plant polysaccharides and soluble oligosaccharides. Upon reductive activation, they cleave the substrate and promote biomass degradation by hydrolytic enzymes. In this study, we employed LPMO9C from Neurospora crassa, which is active toward cellulose and soluble β-glucans, to ...

The human fungal pathogens Candida albicans and Histoplasma capsulatum have been reported to protect against the oxidative burst of host innate immune cells using a family of extracellular proteins with similarity to Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). We report here that these molecules are widespread throughout fungi and deviate from canonical SOD1 at the primary, tertiary, and quaternary le...
