In spite of multiple problems, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is now an acceptable alternative treatment for end-stage renal failure. With proper care and attention to detail, many of its problems can be reduced or eliminated. It is particularly suitable for the very old, the very young and the patient living a long distance from the centre, and it is the treatment of choice for diab...

Retroperitoneal lymphocele is a common complication of renal transplantation. Here, we report the case of a 67-year-old woman with massive ascites after fenestration surgery for a lymphocele that developed following renal transplantation. She had been on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for 9 years. Living donor renal transplantation was performed and an intrapelvic lymphocele subseque...

Roseomonas is a newly described genus of pink-pigmented, nonfermentative, gram-negative bacteria that have been recognized as a cause of human infections. Roseomonas fauriae is a species rarely isolated from clinical specimens. We report the first known case of peritonitis caused by R. fauriae in a patient receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

OBJECTIVES Taiwan succeeded in raising the proportion of peritoneal dialysis (PD) usage after the National Health Insurance (NHI) payment scheme introduced financial incentives in 2005. This study aims to compare the economic costs between automated PD (APD) and continuous ambulatory PD (CAPD) modalities from a societal perspective. DESIGN AND SETTING A retrospective cohort of patients receiv...

A simple figure to quantify the dialysis dose is attractive by all means. It facilitates the dialysis prescription and allows to study effects of the dialysis dose on outcome. KtuVurea as developed by Gotch et al. for haemodialysis, meets this requirement because essentially it means that large patients need more dialysis, either by a higher urea clearance or by a longer treatment time, than sm...

Fungal peritonitis is an uncommon condition which is associated with high morbidity and mortality in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). It is associated with several complications and many of the patients who develop this condition are unable to resume CAPD treatment and have to shift to haemodialysis. Here we report the rare occurrence of fungal peritonitis due to As...

Though peritonitis is a significant problem in managing patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), it is normally readily diagnosed and successfully treated. However, when peritonitis is resistant to standard intraperitoneal antibiotic therapy, an underlying intra-abdominal pathology may be present. Establishing or refuting such a diagnosis can be difficult. We present a CAPD...

Blastobotrys proliferans is an ascomycetous yeast never previously reported as a human pathogen. Here we report a case of peritonitis due to Blastobotrys proliferans in a 46-year-old man undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
