Both genetic and plastic traits contribute to adaptation in novel environments. Phenotypic plasticity can facilitate adaptation by allowing for existence in a wider range of conditions and a faster response to environmental change than gene-based selection. Coastrange sculpins (Cottus aleuticus) colonize new and variable streams arising in the wake of receding glaciers in south-east Alaska, and...

Stimuli were presented that consisted of a stationary row of black-bordered white rectangles. As observers watched, each rectangle in turn from left to right changed from white to black. The final rectangle did not change colour but moved off from left to right. The sequential colour change suggested motion from left to right, and observers reliably reported a visual impression that this illuso...

Colour can provide effective graphic features for tracking non rigid objects in real-time. However the colour of an object can vary over time dependent on the illumination, the visual angle to handle these appearance change a colour based target model must be adapted during temporally stable image observation. The proposed method of this dissertation gives new observation likelihood model with ...

Tea colour determination during fermentation is a vital problem in the tea industries. The human experts have been traditionally measuring change of colour during fermentation by picking up some amount and observing the colour by eye approximation. Methods are also available for analyzing the formation of colour constituents during fermentation. Another method uses colorimeter for determining t...

Sexual dichromatism, a form of sexual dimorphism in which males and females differ in colour, is widespread in animals but has been predominantly studied in birds, fishes and butterflies. Moreover, although there are several proposed evolutionary mechanisms for sexual dichromatism in vertebrates, few studies have examined this phenomenon outside the context of sexual selection. Here, we describ...

Investigations were carried out for available digital image B,G,R data aiming at the derivation of a colour difference measure for the same scene areas imaged in several overlapping images of a photogrammetric bloc. The images were transformed first into the CIE XYZ tristimulus colour space and then into the approximately uniform CIE L*a*b* colour space using both, the known relative spectral s...

In this report we describe how an RGB component colour image may be expanded into a set of channel images, and how the original colour image may be reconstructed from these. We also demonstrate the effect of averaging on the channel images and how it differs from conventional averaging. Finally we demonstrate how boundaries can be detected as a change in the confidence of colour state.

UNLABELLED OBJECTIVES. To investigate repolishing effect of stained provisional prosthetic materials in vitro. METHODS. Thirty two cylindrical specimens (10 x 2 mm) were prepared for each of light-polymerized composites (Revotek LC, Rx-Create), bis-acryl composites (Structur Premium, Protemp Garant3, Luxatemp Fluorescence), methyl-methacrylate (UnifastTRAD) and ethyl-methacrylate (DentalonPlus)...

Mimetic species evolve colours and body patterns to closely resemble poisonous species and thus avoid predation (Batesian mimicry), or resemble beneficial or harmless species in order to approach and attack prey (aggressive mimicry). Facultative mimicry, the ability to switch between mimic and non-mimic colours at will, is uncommon in the animal kingdom, but has been shown in a cephalopod, and ...

Harnessing and applying genomic technologies in resource limited environments demand a next generation of platforms, which are convenient, quick and easy to apply. We describe here a visual colour change assay that can be applied to SNP genotyping, which unlike traditional methods, does not adopt complicated procedures or expensive instrumentation, desirable features in bringing genetic capabil...
