The Mo-based polyoxometalates containing mono- and dicobalt(III) catalyst cores, [CoMo(6)O(24)H(6)](3-) and [Co(2)Mo(10)O(38)H(4)](6-), were found to serve as O(2)-evolving catalysts in a system consisting of tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) and sodium persulfate (S(2)O) in an aqueous borate buffer solution at pH 8.0. Kinetics of O(2) evolution reveals that the higher cobalt ...

We report the use of a water-soluble anionic cobalt(ii) tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (CoTPPS) as a stable, active, and efficient catalyst for electrocatalytic H2 generation from neutral H2O without any organic additives. The molecule features nearly quantitative Faradaic efficiency with a turnover frequency of ∼1.83 s(-1) measured over 1 h and a turnover number of 1.9 × 10(4) moles of H...

Experimental work on the oxidation of the lignin model, syringyl alcohol, using oxygen and a Co(salen) catalyst has revealed variations in yield with different imidazole-based axial ligands. A reasonable linear relationship was found between product yield and pKa of the axial ligand. The current work, using density functional calculations, examined geometric, electronic, and energetic parameter...

Three water-soluble cobalt porphyrins have been investigated as water oxidation catalysts via photo-initiation using Ru(II)(bpy)3(2+)/Na2S2O8. The pH dependence of the turnover frequency revealed maximum activity at pH 11. Based on the second order dependence on catalyst concentration for the rate of water oxidation, we suggest a bimolecular radical coupling process as the rate determining step.

A novel bi-functional cobalt carbonate hydroxide supported on a carbon (CCH/C) catalyst has been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method to meet the demand for the widespread commercialization of the energy conversion and storage technologies, which was used for the first time in ORR and OER. Furthermore, the newly discovered phase-dependent electrocatalytic ORR/OER characteristics of CCH/...

Complex wastewater with massive components is now a serious environmental issue facing humanity. Selective removal of low-concentration contaminants in mixed constituents holds great promise for increasing water supplies. Bioenzymes like horseradish peroxidase exhibit oxidizing power and selectivity. Here, we manufactured its mimic through immobilizing non-heme oxamate anionic cobalt(III) compl...

The viability of a hydrogen economy depends on the design of efficient catalytic systems based on earth-abundant elements. Innovative breakthroughs for hydrogen evolution based on molecular tetraimine cobalt compounds have appeared in the past decade. Here we show that such a diimine-dioxime cobalt catalyst can be grafted to the surface of a carbon nanotube electrode. The resulting electrocatal...

Molecular electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction at a polarized water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface was studied, involving aqueous protons, ferrocene (Fc) in DCE and amphiphilic cobalt porphyrin catalysts adsorbed at the interface. The catalyst, (2,8,13,17-tetraethyl-3,7,12,18-tetramethyl-5-p-amino-phenylporphyrin) cobalt(II) (CoAP), functions like conventional cobalt porphyrins, activating...

A series of bis(benzimidazole)-based cobalt(II) dichloride complexes containing a range of different central donors has been synthesized and characterized. The nature of the central donor affects the binding of the ligand to the cobalt centre and determines the coordination geometry of the metal complexes. All complexes have been shown to catalyse the polymerization of butadiene, in combination...

Cobalt talc doped with iron (Fe/Co~0.1) and dispersed in SiO2 aerogel was prepared from silica alcogel impregnated with metal nitrates by supercritical drying. Catalytic honeycombs were prepared following the same procedure, with the alcogel synthesized directly over cordierite honeycomb pieces. The composite aerogel catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy,...
