Abstract Three species of Rattus, Norway rat (R. norvergicus), black rattus) and Asian house tanezumi) are currently known to occur in South Africa. The latter two cryptic form part the Rattus rattus complex. Historically, R. norvegicus has been reported along coast urban centres, is widespread most areas, except drier while tanezumi was only recorded country (and Africa) ca. 15 years ago, its ...

Although there have been many efforts in the literature to hindcast patterns of longshore sediment transport (LST), they mainly disregarded uncertainty issues. Forcing datasets, wave transformation methods, and LST models are among main sources estimations. The combination aforementioned makes estimation challenging for non-straight coastlines as ranges might vary from site site. In this paper,...

Rainfall prediction is usually done for a region but spot quantitative precipitation forecast is required for individual township, harbours and stations with vital installation. A methodology using data mining technique has been tried for a coastal station, Cuddalore in East Coast of India and the results are presented here. The method gives good result for the prediction of daily rainfall 24 h...

Specific marine macro algae species abundant at the Portuguese coast (Laminaria hyperborea, Bifurcaria bifurcata, Sargassum muticum and Fucus spiralis) were shown to be effective for removing toxic metals (Cd(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II)) from aqueous solutions. The initial metal concentrations in solution were about 75-100 mg L(-1). The observed biosorption capacities for cadmium, zinc and lead ions...

Inimicus japonicus, the devil stinger, has an extensive distribution along the coast of China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Nineteen highly polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized in I. japonicus. Twenty-eight individuals from a wild population were tested for polymorphism using this set of polymorphic microsatellite markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged ...

Surface sediments collected from 2001 to 2011 were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and five heavy metals. The sediment concentration ranges of TPH, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Hg were 6.3-535 μg/g, 58-332 μg/g, 7.2-63 μg/g, 4.3-138 μg/g, 0-0.98μg/g, and 0.10-0.68 μg/g, respectively. These results met the highest marine sediment quality standards in China, indicating that the sediment was...

We present here the first results of Hg concentrations in three small shark species (Rhizoprionodon lalandei, R. porosus and Mustelus higmani) from the SE Brazilian coast. Mercury concentrations in R. lalandei ranged from 21.5 to 280.0 ng.g-1 dry weight (d.w.) (average 74.6 ng.g-1 d.w.; 17.9 ng.g-1 wet weight). In R. porosus, concentrations ranged from 7.6 to 90.5 ng.g-1 d.w. (average 42.2 ng.g...
