Depleted natural gas reservoirs are promising targets for carbon dioxide sequestration. Although depleted, these reservoirs are not devoid of methane, and carbon dioxide injection may allow enhanced production of methane by reservoir repressurization or pressure maintenance. Based on the favorable results of numerous simulation studies, we propose a field test of the Carbon Sequestration with E...

Uncertainties of CO2 injection-sequestration in a CBM is driven by the complex process of gas desorptioncontrolled mechanism attributed to the natural characteristics of CBM and to the impact of the wells engaged in the reservoir. This work presents the reservoir characterization and simulation process focused on natural gas production and subsequent CO2 injection into an unmineable coal seam i...

As policy makers look for strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they need to understand what options are available and under what conditions these technologies could be economically competitive. This paper explores the economics of carbon capture and sequestration technologies using the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model. We model two of the most promising carbon...

Improved agricultural, forestry, and land management practices could be used to increase soil carbon and thereby significantly reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration. Understanding biological and edaphic processes that increase and retain soil carbon can lead to specific manipulations for enhancement of soil C sequestration. These manipulations, however, will only be suitable for adoption if they...

The potential of halotolerant algae isolated from natural resources was used to study CO2 fixation and algal lipid production. Biological fixation of CO2 in photobioreactor in presence of salinity is exploited. The CO2 concentration 1060 ppm gave the highest biomass yield (700 mg dry wt/l), the highest total lipid content (10.33%) with 80% of CO2 removal.

For optimization of geological carbon sequestration (GCS) in saline aquifers, a genetic algorithm (GA) based optimizer has been developed and combined with the DOE multi-phase flow and heat transfer numerical simulation code TOUGH2 [1],[2]. Designated GA-TOUGH2, this combined solver/optimizer has been validated by performing optimization studies on a number of model problems and comparing the r...

In this paperwe describe CO2-PENS, a comprehensive system-level computational model for performance assessment of geologic sequestration of CO2. CO2-PENS is designed to perform probabilistic simulations of CO2 capture, transport, and injection in different geologic reservoirs. Additionally, the long-term fate of CO2 injected in geologic formations, including possible migration out of the target...

It is technically feasible to capture CO2 from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant and various researchers are working to understand the fate of sequestered CO2 and its long term environmental effects. Sequestering CO2 significantly reduces the CO2 emissions from the power plant itself, but this is not the total picture. CO2 capture and sequestration consumes additional energy, thus loweri...

Reservoir depletion and subsequent CO2 injection into the depleted geological reservoir induce stress changes that may mechanically damage top seal and wells, or trigger existing faults, creating the leakage pathways for CO2 escape from the reservoir. The role of geomechanics is to assess the mechanical impact of stress changes on seals, wells and faults. Since many hydrocarbon fields are geome...

Glossary Carbon sequestration: capture and secure storage of carbon that would otherwise be emitted to or remain in the atmosphere. Carbon sources: for this chapter, we are concerned with large stationary sources of CO2, e.g. fossil fueled power plants, cement manufacturing, ammonia production, iron and non-ferrous metal smelters, industrial boilers, refineries, natural gas wells. Carbon captur...
