Consumption of acidic foods and drinks and other factors that cause enamel wear are responsible for the daily enamel loss and degradation. Use of some toothpastes that have been showed to possess different properties of remineralisation and/or repair of the enamel surface may help to protect tooth enamel. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of toothpaste containing Zn-carbonat...

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, and, currently, therapeutic hypothermia, now called targeted temperature management (TTM), is the only recent treatment modality proven to increase survival rates and reduce morbidity for this condition. Shivering and subsequent metabolic stress, however, limit application and benefit of TTM. Stimulating central nervous system A1 ...

BACKGROUND A community health assessment (CHA) is used to identify and address health issues in a given population. Effective CHA requires timely and comprehensive information from a wide variety of sources, such as: socio-economic data, disease surveillance, healthcare utilization, environmental data, and health resource allocation. Indonesia is a developing country with 235 million inhabitant...

Two cholic acid (ChA) analogues, containing a 4-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD) moiety at C-3, were incorporated into ChA aggregates and submitted to fluorescence quenching by the two enantiomers of several tryptophan derivatives. In all cases, a significant stereodifferentiation was observed; the most remarkable effect was found when comparing the 3alpha and the 3beta diastereomers.

The unidirectional porous hydroxyapatite HAp (UDPHAp) is a scaffold with continuous communicated pore structure in the axial direction. We evaluated and compared the ability of the UDPHAp as a three-dimensional (3D) bone tissue engineering scaffold to the interconnected calcium porous HAp ceramic (IP-CHA). To achieve this, we evaluated in vitro the compressive strength, controlled rhBMP-2 relea...

A gas permeable CHA-type aluminophosphate molecular sieve membrane was ionothermally synthesized on a porous d-alumina substrate through the so-called “substrate surface conversion” method. The synthetic conditions for this specific membrane were optimized. The temperature, time and the amounts of H3PO4 and HF in the initial synthesis solution were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scannin...

Background: Certain marker studies have practical importance in the biology of prostate cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the quantification of certain neuroendocrine and proliferative markers obtained during transurethral resection or prostatectomy, would help in the prognostic evaluation of prostatic adenocarcinomas. Methods: The present study was performed on samples...

BACKGROUND For more than 50 years, Community Health Aides and Community Health Practitioners (CHA/Ps) have resided in and provided care for the residents of their villages. OBJECTIVES This study is a systematic description of the clinical practice of primary care health workers in rural Alaska communities. This is the first evaluation of the scope of health problems seen by these lay health w...

Aromatic amino acids have been shown to promote self-assembly of amyloid peptides, although the basis for this amyloid-inducing behavior is not understood. We adopted the amyloid-β 16-22 peptide (Aβ(16-22), Ac-KLVFFAE-NH(2)) as a model to study the role of aromatic amino acids in peptide self-assembly. Aβ(16-22) contains two consecutive Phe residues (19 and 20) in which Phe 19 side chains form ...

N6-Cyclohexyl[3H]adenosine ([3H]CHA) and 1,3-diethyl-8-[3H]phenylxanthine ([3H]DPX) to bind to adenosine receptors in brain membranes. The agonist [3H]CHA has high affinity in both bovine and guinea pig brain (Kd, 0.7 nM and 6 nM, respectively). [3H]CHA binding kinetics are slow (dissociation t1/2;60 min); binding is much higher at 25 degrees C than at 0 degrees C and is inhibited by guanine nu...
