Improving a long standing result of Bent and John, we obtain a (2+ )n lower bound (for some fixed > 0) on the number of comparisons required, in the worst case, for selecting the median of n elements. The new lower bound is obtained using a weight function that allows us to combine leaf counting and adversary arguments.
Regression testing is a testing activity that is performed to provide confidence that changes do not harm the existing behaviour of the software. Test suites tend to grow in size as software evolve, often making it too costly to execute entire test suites. A number of different approaches have been studied to maximise the value of the accrued test suite: minimisation, selection and prioritisati...
Regression testing is the most expensive technique, but this technique gives confidence that whatever changes has been incorporated they are not making any adverse affect to the output. In Regression Test Selection Technique (RTST), we select test case from existing test set and perform test to validate modify the software. In this framework, it has been tried to reduce costs by selecting and r...
In Hoare’s (1961) original version of the algorithm Find the partitioning element in the central divide-and-conquer step is chosen uniformly at random from the set S in question. Here we consider a variant where this element is the median of a sample of size 2k + 1 from S. We investigate convergence in distribution of the number of comparisons required and obtain a simple explicit result for th...
Model-based testing (MBT) is an approach that takes software specification as the base for the formal model creation and, from it, enables the test case extraction. Depending on the type of model, an MBT tool can support functional and statistical tests. However, there are few tools that support both testing techniques. Moreover, the ones that support them offer a limited number of coverage cri...

In case-based reasoning systems, several learning techniques may apply to a given situation. In a failuredriven learning environment, the problems of strategy selection are to choose the best set of learning algorithms or strategies that recover from a processing failure and to use the strategies to modify the system’s background knowledge so that the failure will not repeat in similar future s...
In this paper we develop new dependence and conditional dependence measures and provide their estimators. An attractive property of these measures and estimators is that they are invariant to any monotone increasing transformations of the random variables, which is important in many applications including feature selection. Under certain conditions we show the consistency of these estimators, d...
The first stage in development and design of Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants (PSHP) is finding the optimum location. This paper presents a methodology for preliminary site selection of PSHP with the help of geospatial data analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. The conventional method of PSHP site selection has certain limitations and is not cost and time effective. The...
We consider the XPath evaluation problem: Evaluate an XPath query Q on a streaming XML document D. We consider two versions of the problem: 1). Filtering Problem: Determine if there is a match for Q in D. 2). Node Selection Problem: Determine the set Q(D) of document nodes selected by Q. We consider Conjunctive XPath (CXPath) queries that involve only the child and descendant axes. Let d denote...
