One of the hallmarks of membrane protein structure is the high frequency of transmembrane helix kinks, which commonly occur at proline residues. Because the proline side chain usually precludes normal helix geometry, it is reasonable to expect that proline residues generate these kinks. We observe, however, that the three prolines in bacteriorhodopsin transmembrane helices can be changed to ala...
Structure, formation energy and mobility of kinks in 1/2a<111> screw dislocation in metallic Ta have been investigated via low temperature (0.001K) molecular dynamics with a new, first principle based, Embedded-Atom-Model (EAM) potential. We studied a/3<112> kinks using a simulation cell containing four dislocations in a quadrupolar arrangement. We impose periodic boundary conditions in the dir...
Given a kink bearing Hamiltonian, Isospectral Hamiltonian approach is used in generating new sets of Hamiltonains which also admit kink solutions. We use Sine-Gordon model as a example and explicitly work out the new sets of potentials and the solutions. * E-mail address: [email protected] 1 Nonlinear field theory models in (1+1) dimensions, with Lagrangian density L = 12∂μφ∂φ − V (φ) ,...
This paper compares the design and performance of kink actuators, a modified version of the bent-beam thermal actuator, to the standard chevron-shaped designs. A variety of kink and chevron actuator designs were fabricated from polysilicon. While the actuators were electrically probed, these designs were tested using a probe station connected to a National Instruments (NI) controller that uses ...
We consider kink-antikink collisions in the TDSG system introduced by Speight and Ward in 1994. We find that the TDSG kink supports extra internal modes of vibration and this results in resonance effects of the kind seen for the continuum φ 4 system.
The Casimir energy of quantum fluctuations about the classical kink configuration is computed numerically in the weak coupling approximation for a recently proposed lattice sineGordon model. This energy depends periodically on the kink position and is found to be approximately sinusoidal. PACS classification numbers: 03.65.Sq, 11.10.Lm, 63.10.+a.
We study the spectrum of fermionic modes on cosmic string loops. We find no fermionic zero modes nor massive bound states — this implies that vortons stabilized by fermionic currents do not exist. We have also studied kink-(anti)kink and vortex-(anti)vortex systems and find that all systems that have vanishing net topological charge do not support fermionic bound modes.
In this work, we investigate the soliton scattering problem for anti-kink/kink and kink/anti-kink configurations. To end, employ two distinct methods, full simulation collective coordinates, compare them. We apply coordinate approximation method to describe both configurations in hybrid model show that, similar polynomial models [Formula: see text] text], has limitations with respect initial ve...
We investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the carrier states that are localized at a potential kink and a kink-antikink in bilayer graphene. These chiral states are localized at the interface between two potential regions with opposite signs.PACS numbers: 71.10.Pm, 73.21.-b, 81.05.Uw.
A method for describing the quantum kink states in the semi-classical limit of several (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical models is developed. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the masses of the kink in the sine-Gordon and cubic sinh-Gordon models and another two P(φ)2 systems with polynomial self-interactions.
