Suday, Sptem er 5, 2016 CONCLUSION: Dorsal bridge plate fixation of distal radius fractures restores preoperative physiologic measures of the radius, ulna, and carpus. No significant carpal translocation occurred during distal bridge plate fixation to the 2nd or 3rd metacarpal bone. While additional studies are needed, fixation to the 2nd metacarpal is preferred as it does not translocate the w...

We report an 82-year-old woman who underwent fixation with a long-spanning cable-plate for a bisphosphonate-induced Vancouver B1 periprosthetic femoral fracture. Non-union and breakage of the plate occurred at 16 months and necessitated revision surgery using a long-stem femoral prosthesis augmented with a cable-plate construct. Bone union was achieved eventually after 10 months.

Nonunion of the humerus in a severely osteoporotic bone is a likely event especially if the fracture is transverse. The management of such a combination is a challenge. Most of the conventional fixation methods are unlikely to succeed as the bone failure precedes implant failure in osteoporosis. The challenge is further compounded in severe osteoporosis when the cortical thickness is affected m...

Rats maintained for 8 months on a level of warfarin sufficient to decrease the vitamin K-dependent protein of bone (bone Gla protein) to 2% of normal have an excessive mineralization disorder characterized by complete fusion of the proximal tibial growth plate and cessation of longitudinal growth. The general features of this abnormality resemble the fetal warfarin syndrome in humans, a disorde...

An oblique fracture of the distal third of the right metatarsus in a three-year-old dromedary heifer weighing about 300 kilograms was immobilized with a 4.5 mm broad-webbed 12-hole dynamic compression bone plate and two interfragmental compression screws. The animal showed slight lameness after 16 weeks of surgery that disappeared after removal of the plate. The result was quite encouraging and...

Despite numerous available treatment strategies, the management of complex proximal humeral fractures remains demanding. Impaired bone quality and considerable comorbidities pose special challenges in the growing aging population. Complications after operative treatment are frequent, in particular loss of reduction with varus malalignment and subsequent screw cutout. Locking plate fixation has ...

BACKGROUND Massive bone defects of the acetabulum with pelvic discontinuity are one of the major problems in revision total hip arthroplasty. Several techniques have been described for repair of acetabular defect; however, reconstruction of acetabulum with massive bone defect is still a major problem. We describe a patient who required four revision total hip arthroplasty during a 24-year perio...

The purpose of the present study was to compare the results and plate fit of periprosthetic and non-periprosthetic distal femur fractures fixed with locking plates. Twenty-one periprosthetic fractures above a TKA and 27 non-periprosthetic fractures were retrospectively reviewed. The primary healing rate, bone union time, clinical and radiographic results, complications, and additional surgeries...

The advancement and intensive use of chemotherapy in treating childhood cancers has led to a growing population of young cancer survivors who face increased bone health risks. However, the underlying mechanisms for chemotherapy-induced skeletal defects remain largely unclear. Methotrexate (MTX), the most commonly used antimetabolite in paediatric cancer treatment, is known to cause bone growth ...

INTRODUCTION: G Protein-coupled Estrogen Receptor 1 (GPER1) is a novel receptor that binds to estrogen with high affinity. The receptor is present on growth plate chondrocytes, osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts and has been shown to play a functional role in promoted growth plate closure and bone remodeling [1]. The finding from a mouse study with the deficiency of GPER1 protein showed a...
