Polyomavirus BK (BKV)-associated nephropathy causes premature kidney transplant (KT) failure. BKV viruria and viremia are biomarkers of disease progression, but associated risk factors are controversial. A total of 682 KT patients receiving basiliximab, mycophenolic acid (MPA), corticosteroids were randomized 1:1 to cyclosporine (CsA) or tacrolimus (Tac). Risk factors were analyzed in 629 (92.2...
Cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women worldwide. A persistent infection with high risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) is necessary for cervical cancer to occur. However, the great majority of women that are infected with HR-HPV will not develop cervical cancer, indicating that HR-HPV alone is not adequate to drive the development of cervical cancer, suggesting the in...
The role of the polyomavirus BK (BKV) large tumor antigen (L-Tag) as a target of immune response in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) has not been investigated thus far. In this study, we comparatively analyzed humoral and cellular L-Tag-specific responsiveness in age-matched patients bearing PCa or benign prostatic hyperplasia, expressing or not expressing BKV L-Tag-specific sequences in the...
TO THE EDITOR: The BK virus (BKV) is a human polyomavirus of the Papovaviridae family and causes clinical disease mainly in immunocompromised hosts such as patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus or transplant recipients [1]. Only a few cases of BKV encephalitis have been reported in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant recipients, with the majority of cases presenting with conc...
We compared a multiplex viral transplant panel on the ICEPlex system to real-time PCR for the detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and BK virus (BKV). The sensitivities of the ICEPlex were 83.3%, 95.5%, and 65.5% for the detection of CMV, EBV, and BKV, respectively. Interestingly, the multiplex assay detected dual infections in 16/280 (5.7%) samples tested.
The presented study had its aim in establishing the prevalence and etiological structure of post-transplant viral complications and the kinetics of infection development. Two groups of recipients were examined: Group 1 comprised patients without any clinical signs of infection (n=84) monitored for a year, Group 2 included recipients with a clinical presentation of infection (n=92). 591 blood sa...
Adenovirus (ADV)- or BK virus (BKV)-associated hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a common complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Several risk factors have been previously reported; however, it unclear whether virus-associated HC can be transmitted. To clarify this point, we performed retrospective cohort study on 207 consecutive patients who underwent allo...
BACKGROUND Methods for determining the origin of BK virus (BKV)-infected cells (decoy cells) in clinical urine samples have not been established although they could enhance the diagnosis of BKV infection in immunocompromised patients. METHODS We performed simultaneous immunostaining with anti-S100P (a urothelial marker) and anti-SV40 antibodies in 66 clinical urine samples exhibiting SV40 pos...
