Migratory birds have been implicated in the spread of some zoonotic diseases, but how well infected individuals can fly remains poorly understood. We used western sandpipers, Calidris mauri, to experimentally test whether flight is affected when long-distance migrants are mounting an immune response and whether migrants maintain immune defences during a flight in a wind tunnel. We measured five...

avian chlamydiosis is one of the most important infectious diseases of birds. despite the rapid growth of exotic bird populations in iran, there is little or no information on the specific infections that these types of birds carry. in this study, conventional isolation methods were used in cell culture to study occurrence of infection in pet birds. samples from the conjunctiva, choana, and clo...

During May and June 1992 there was a marked increase in reports of campylobacter infections compared with other years. Several affected patients mentioned they had been drinking milk from bottles previously pecked by birds. A case control study was initiated to investigate whether there was any significant association. It was concluded that drinking milk pecked by birds was associated significa...

To determine the effectiveness of ducks as sentinels for avian influenza virus (AIV) infection, we placed mallards in contact with wild birds at resting sites in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Infections of sentinel birds with different AIV subtypes confirmed the value of such surveillance for AIV monitoring.

Several authors have given brief descriptions of deposits of pigment found by them in the tissues of birds which had for some length of time been infected with h~emocytozoa. Danilewsky, in his "Para-sitologie Compar6e du Sang," in 1889, speaks of the changes in the hmmopoietie organs and describes macrophages containing pigment masses, parasitiferous and shrunken red corpuscles and the remains ...

The effectiveness of malaria control measures depends not only on the potency of the control measures themselves but also upon the influence of variables associated with the environment. Environmental variables have the capacity either to enhance or to impair the desired outcome. An optimal outcome in the field, which is ultimately the real goal of vaccine research, will result from prior knowl...

Inoculation of 200 mean egg infectious doses (EID(50)) of lentogenic Newcastle disease virus strain B1 (NDV-B1) into the air sac of 4-day-old specific-pathogen-free chicks provided significant protection against challenge of the air sac with 100 chicken mean lethal doses (LD(50)) of velogenic NDV-H but no protection against reinfection when the challenge was by the eye. Conversely, inoculation ...

Host-genetic control of influenza virus infection has been the object of little attention. In this study we determined that two inbred lines of chicken differing in their genetic background , Lines 0 and C-B12, were respectively relatively resistant and susceptible to infection with the low pathogenicity influenza virus A/Turkey/England/647/77 as defined by substantial differences in viral shed...

background: despite the use of prophylactic chemotherapy and vaccination, coccidiosis is still one of the most devastating diseases in poultry industry. understanding the immune mechanism helps researchers to prevent this parasitic infection more effectively. objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibody response in chickens, induced by a live attenuated vaccine (livacox q)...

H5N6 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) may pose a potential human risk as suggested by the first documented naturally-acquired human H5N6 virus infection in 2014. Here, we report the first cases of fatal H5N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) infection in a domestic cat and wild birds. These cases followed human H5N6 infections in China and preceded an H5N6 outbreak in chickens. The extensive migration ...
