Formed in 1927, the College is a not-for-profit organisation training surgeons and maintaining surgical standards in Australia and New Zealand. A Fellowship based organisation, the College is committed to ensuring the highest standard of safe and comprehensive surgical care for the community we serve through excellence in surgical education, training, professional development and support. As pa...
Genetic and cell biological analyses of sperm behavior in the female reproductive tract are providing important clues to the mechanisms of sperm competition, a form of sexual selection that is an important force that shapes reproductive behavior, physiology and morphology in a wide range of species.
The biological consequences of the classical theory of competition are shown to be at least partly a function of a very special way of interpreting particular constants in simple equations. Ii is shown how altered consequences may be obtained by different, but equally plausible, interpretations of those constants.
In four distinct alstroemeria-infecting cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolates, additional sequences of various lengths were present in the 3' nontranslated regions of their RNAs 2 and 3, apparently the result of intra- and intermolecular recombination events. Competition experiments revealed that these recombined RNA 2 and 3 segments increased the biological fitness of CMV in alstroemeria.
Local competition among neighboring neurons is common in biological neural networks (NNs). We apply the concept to gradient-based, backprop-trained artificial multilayer NNs. NNs with competing linear units tend to outperform those with non-competing nonlinear units, and avoid catastrophic forgetting when training sets change over time.

Using Zn(2+)-BPMP or Cu(2+)-BPMP as a receptor and o-mercaptophenol as an indicator, potentiometric sensing of aqueous phosphate by competition assays was achieved. With attractive features of portability, low cost and resistance to interference from turbidity and color, this sensor was successfully used for phosphate detection in biological and water samples.
Using a bit-string model similar to biological simulations, the competition between different languages is simulated both without and with spatial structure. We compare our agent-based work with differential equations and the competing bit-string model of Kosmidis et al.
Deception techniques are Information Warfare strategies commonly used by biological organisms and organisations to gain an advantage during competition. In this paper we examine two related techniques, misperception and self-deception, which we relate to the four canonical Information Warfare strategies and Boyd's OODA loop model.
