It is shown that a wormlike chain, i.e., a filament with a fixed contour-length ¯ S and a bending elasticity κ, attached to a frame of length L, can be described—at low resolutions—by the same type of elastic free-energy as a tense string. The corresponding tension is calculated as a function of temperature, L, κ and ¯ S. Elastic free-energies are used to describe the distorted states and fluct...

We have developed an algorithm to determine membrane structure, area per lipid, and bending rigidity from molecular dynamics simulations of lipid vesicles. Current methods to extract structure from vesicle simulations define densities relative to the global center of mass of the vesicle. This approach ignores the long-wavelength fluctuations (undulations) that develop across the sphere and broa...

The bacterial flagellar hook connects the helical flagellar filament to the rotary motor at its base. Bending flexibility of the hook allows the helical filaments to form a bundle behind the cell body to produce thrust for bacterial motility. The hook protein FlgE shows considerable sequence and structural similarities to the distal rod protein FlgG; however, the hook is supercoiled and flexibl...

We use the cyclization of small DNA molecules, approximately 200 bp in length, to study conformational properties of DNA fragments with single-stranded gaps. The approach is extremely sensitive to DNA conformational properties and, being complemented by computations, allows a very accurate determination of the fragment's conformational parameters. Sequence-specific nicking endonucleases are use...

Protein -helices are ubiquitous secondary structural elements, seldom considered to be stable without tertiary contacts. However, amino acid sequences in proteins that are based on alternating repeats of four glutamic acid (E) residues and four positively charged residues, a combination of arginine (R) and lysine (K), have been shown to form stable -helices in a few proteins, in the absence of ...

Bioabsorbable implants offer an attractive alternative to metallic implants to stabilize small bone fractures in the hand. Self-reinforced bioabsorbable miniplating for metacarpal fractures was studied in bones from cadavers and compared with standard metallic fixation methods. One hundred twelve fresh-frozen metacarpals from humans had three-point bending and torsional loading after transverse...

This paper addresses the bending behaviour of individual multi-filament yarns for use in textile forming analyses. Yarn specimens deform nonlinearly under their own weight in a cantilever configuration. A relation between the applied moment and the resulting curvature is established. Numerical simulations are performed to establish the contribution of shear rigidity to the deflection.

– We have investigated the thermal fluctuations of giant unilamellar dimyristoylphosphatidlycholine vesicles in the presence of both non-ionic and ionic surfactants (peptides) with identical apolar chains. Using vesicle fluctuation analysis, the effects of ionic and non-ionic surfactants upon membrane bending rigidity in the case of no added salt have been determined and the electrostatic contr...

The bending rigidity k(c) of bilayer vesicles self-assembled from amphiphilic diblock copolymers has been measured using single- and dual-micropipet techniques. These copolymers are nearly a factor of 5 greater in hydrophobic membrane thickness d than their lipid counterparts and an order of magnitude larger in molecular weight M(n). The macromolecular structure of these amphiphiles lends insig...

The regeneration kinetics of the integral membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin have been investigated in a lipid-based refolding system. Previous studies on bacteriorhodopsin regeneration have involved detergent-based systems, and in particular mixed dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC)/CHAPS micelles. Here, we show that the short chain lipid dihexanoylphosphatidylcholine (DHPC) can be substitut...
