In northern NSW, Australia, coastal populations are forecast to increase dramatically over the next 25 years (the "sea change"). However, management of the effects of development on marine communities is hampered by the lack of data on key habitats. Consequently, we developed a protocol to assess the biodiversity and current human impacts on nearshore reefs, habitats that will be readily affect...

At-sea detection of marine debris presents a difficult problem, as the debris items are often relatively small and partially submerged. However, they may accumulate in water parcel boundaries or eddy lines. The application of models, satellite radar and multispectral data, and airborne remote sensing (particularly radar) to focus the search on eddies and convergence zones in the open ocean appe...

We report an outbreak of botulism that occurred in July 2002 in a group of 12 Alaskan Yu'pik Eskimos who ate blubber and skin from a beached beluga whale. Botulism death rates among Alaska Natives have declined in the last 20 years, yet incidence has increased.

Abundance of ingested debris by seals has been mentioned as a potential indicator of marine litter in the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A sample of 107 stomachs, 100 intestines and 125 scats of harbour seals from the Netherlands was analysed for the presence of plastics. Incidence of plastic was 11% for stomachs, 1% for intestines, and 0% for scats. Younger animals, up to...

Abstract It is believed that the debris discovered in ocean originated on land and was unintentionally purposely transported by a river. Marine will accumulate water’s surface sink to bottom over time, polluting seawater if left mismanaged. The life of marine organism be threatened existence debris. purpose this study quantify quantity macro-sized generated fishing activities. This carried out ...

Abstract Marine debris one of the source marine pollution that will damage ecosystems and be harmful to human health. To deal with debris, government has formed a national action plan for 2018-2025 as implementation Presidential Regulation No. 83 2018 concerning handling debris. Law enforcement is strategies in plan, but practice, law cannot implemented effectively. The absence sanctions given ...

Plastic is cheap, ubiquitous and persistent. In 2010 the world produced 265M tonnes. Annual output is increasing with new uses and varieties augmenting demand. Plastic persists for centuries, much of it finding its way into coasts and waterways. Approximately 80% of marine debris is plastic (mostly bags and bottles), accumulating through spillage, runoff, dumping and discharge; with varied envi...

Plastic production has increased dramatically worldwide over the last 60 years and it is nowadays recognized as a serious threat to the marine environment. Plastic pollution is ubiquitous, but quantitative estimates on the global abundance and weight of floating plastics are still limited, particularly for the Southern Hemisphere and the more remote regions. Some large-scale convergence zones o...
