Background and purpose : Instalation of protective barrier against diagnostic x-ray is generally done based on the recommendations of NCRP49. There are analytic methods for designing protective barriers howerer, they lack sufficient efficiency and considering the NCRP49 reports, designing mechanical protective barrier in order to protect the initial x-ray radiation and absorption of the ray q...
A model providing a semi-quantitative account for the magnetic behavior of Co nanoparticles embedded in a CoO matrix is presented. The results confirm that exchange coupling at the interface between FM and AFM nanostructures, could provide an extra source of magnetic anisotropy, leading to thermal stability of the FM nanoparticles. It is shown that perpendicular coupling between the AFM and FM ...

We interpret the time interval data obtained from periodically stimulated sensory neurons in terms of two simple dynamical systems driven by noise with an embedded weak periodic function called the signal: 1) a bistable system defined by two potential wells separated by a barrier, and 2) a FitzHugh-Nagumo system. The implementation is by analog simulation: electronic circuits which mimic the dy...
UNLABELLED Evolutionary relationships are frequently described by phylogenetic trees, but a central barrier in many fields is the difficulty of interpreting data containing conflicting phylogenetic signals. We present a metric-based method for comparing trees which extracts distinct alternative evolutionary relationships embedded in data. We demonstrate detection and resolution of phylogenetic ...

The segregation of native defects and Bi impurities to a high-angle grain boundary in ZnO is studied by first-principles calculations. It is found that the presence of Bi(Zn) increases the concentration of native defects of acceptor type in the grain boundary. This leads to the formation of a Bi(Zn)+V(Zn)+O(i) interfacial complex under O-rich conditions and exhibits a localized acceptor state. ...
Resting spores of Bacillus megaterium appear uniformly opaque and undifferentiated under the electron microscope. Germinated spores and spores which have lost their dipicolinic acid underwent characteristic changes in structure. Spores fixed with KMnO(4) lose their dipicolinic acid. Spores fixed with OsO(4) under certain conditions retain their dipicolinic acid. When conventional sectioning pro...
This paper explores the vibration damping properties of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) containing thin plastically deformable metallic layers embedded in an elastic ceramic matrix. We develop an elastic–plastic dynamical model to study how work hardening, yield strain, and elastic modulus of the metal affect the macroscopic damping behavior of the coating. Finite element (FE) simulations valid...
