Acute fever is one of the most common presenting symptoms globally. In order to reduce the empiric use of antimicrobial drugs and improve outcomes, it is essential to improve diagnostic capabilities. In the absence of microbiology facilities in low-income settings, an assay to distinguish bacterial from non-bacterial causes would be a critical first step. To ensure that patient and market needs...
The problems of bacterial contamination associated with the shipment or preservation of serum specimens to be tested with the conventional serologic tests for syphilis are increased when such specimens are to be tested with the Treponema pallidum Immobilization (TPI) test. Bacterial contamination interferes with the ease and accuracy of reading the test and the metabolic or somatic products of ...
BACKGROUND Multiantibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a threat to patients and place an economic burden on health care systems. Carbapenem-resistant bacilli and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producers drive the need to screen infected and colonized patients for patient management and infection control. METHODS We describe a multiplex microfluidic PCR test for perianal swab samples (Acuita...
The threat to human health posed by antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens is of growing concern to medical practice. This study investigated the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Salmonella typhi isolated from blood specimen. One hundred blood samples were collected from suspected typhoid fever patients in 31 Artillery Brigade Medical Centre, Minna, and were analyzed for S. typhi while antib...
Fishmeal extract agar is a new antibiotic sensitivity test medium. It is simpler and cheaper than Mueller-Hinton agar and comparable in its efficacy to the latter. It can also be used for isolation of moderately fastidious and non-fastidious bacteria from clinical specimens. Fishmeal extract broth can be used as a base for biochemical tests used for the identification of bacterial isolates.
conclusions the use of leukocyte esterase urine dipstick test can be a quick and easy method in early diagnosis of sbp to start the treatment until preparation of sbp-cell count results. results in this study, 100 patients with ascites due to cirrhosis, with an average age of 38.9 ± 6.54 years were evaluated. twenty cases had positive results, of whom 17 cases were also detected based on the st...
this study was performed to detect cultivable canine gastric helicobacter-like organisms (ghlo’s) and to evaluate their sensitivity to common antibiotics in two groups of naturally infected dogs (pets and stray dogs). gastric samples were taken from the body and antrum of 30 pets and 30 stray dogs. from each part of canine gastric mucosa, four gastroscopic samples were used for impression smear...
conclusions: with respect to the obtained results and regarding to the daily increase of the resistant microbial strains to the commercial antibiotics, it can be concluded that these extracts can be proper candidates of antibacterial substance against pathogenic bacterial species especially s. aureus, e. coli, k. pneumoniae and s. epidermidis. results: the extract of c. fistula was effective ag...
A simple Gram stain evaluation for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis was assessed in comparison to Nugent's method. The sensitivity (90%), specificity (94%), positive and negative predictive values (90% and 94%), and good interobserver agreement obtained indicate that the test method can be performed reliably in the routine clinical microbiology laboratory.
