Noctilucent, or "night-shining," clouds (NLCs) are a spectacular optical nighttime phenomenon that is very often neglected in the context of atmospheric optics. This paper gives a brief overview of current understanding of NLCs by providing a simple physical picture of their formation, relevant observational characteristics, and scientific challenges of NLC research. Modern ground-based photogr...

Abstract. Using Aura Microwave Limb Sounder satellite observations of stratospheric nitrous oxide (N2O), ozone, and temperature from 2005 through 2021, we calculate the atmospheric lifetime N2O to be decreasing at a rate −2.1 ± 1.2 %/decade. This decrease is occurring because abundances in middle tropical stratosphere, where photochemically destroyed, are increasing faster than bulk lower atmos...

Long path length FTIR-smog chamber techniques were used to determine k(Cl + CF3CF@CH2) = (7.03 ± 0.59) · 10 , k(OH + CF3CF@CH2) = (1.05 ± 0.17) · 10 , and k(O3 + CF3CF@CH2) = (2.77 ± 0.21) · 10 21 cm molecule 1 s 1 in 700 Torr of N2, N2/O2, or air diluent at 296 K. CF3CF@CH2 has an atmospheric lifetime of approximately 11 days and a global warming potential (100 yr time horizon) of four. CF3CF@...

A search for the dinucleon decay pp → K+ K+ has been performed using 91.6  kton·yr data from Super-Kamiokande-I. This decay provides a sensitive probe of the R-parity-violating parameter λ112''. A boosted decision tree analysis found no signal candidates in the data. The expected background was 0.28±0.19 atmospheric neutrino induced events and the estimated signal detection efficiency was 12.6%...

Results from the first chemistry-transport model study of the impact of the 1783–1784 Laki fissure eruption (Iceland: 64 N, 17 W) upon atmospheric composition are presented. The eruption released an estimated 61 Tg(S) as SO2 into the troposphere and lower stratosphere. The model has a high resolution tropopause region, and detailed sulphur chemistry. The simulated SO2 plume spreads over much of...

A detailed literature search was performed to assess the sources, magnitudes and extent of human inhalation exposure to propylene. Exposure evaluations were performed at both the community and occupational levels for those living or working in different environments. The results revealed a multitude of pyrogenic, biogenic and anthropogenic emission sources. Pyrogenic sources, including biomass ...
