Infective Endocarditis is an extremely rare etiology of sinus of Valsalva-right atrial fistulas, abnormal connections between the aorta and the right atrium. We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with native aortic valve Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis complicated by sinus of Valsalva abscess perforation associated with an acute heart block, an aorto-right atrial fistula, severe...

Drugs that localize in valvular vegetations may be useful in the diagnosis and treatment of infective endocarditis. We therefore tested the hypothesis that parenterally injected hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), which is concentrated in tumors and atherosclerotic plaques, localizes in the vegetations of experimental infective endocarditis. In 14 rabbits, various bacteria were given intra-arteri...

Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) is a coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that can cause destructive infective endocarditis. S. lugdunensis, unlike other CoNS, should be considered to be a pathogen. We report the first case of S. lugdunensis endocarditis causing ventricular septal defect and destruction of the aortic and mitral valves. A 53-year-old male with morbid obesity and ...

AIM OF THE STUDY We retrospectively analyzed the results of operations conducted for aortic prosthetic valve endocarditis in a single center over 19 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS From February 1992 to January 2011, we performed operations on 27 patients with aortic prosthetic valve endocarditis. Seventeen patients (63.0%) were male, and the mean age was 39.1 ± 14.2 (16-67) years. Blood cultures...

UNLABELLED The Bentall procedure is the gold standard for treating aortic dissection complicated with valvular and ascending aorta disease. Recent results for this procedure have been excellent; nearly 100% of patients remain free of infective endocarditis in long-term follow-up. We report a case of delayed Streptococcus agalactiae infective endocarditis complicated by mycotic aneurysm in a man...

A young woman with unexplained radiographic calcification of the ascending aorta was found at necropsy to have healed idiopathic aorititis. Calcification also involved the aortic valve which was stenosed and the mitral valve. Death was the result of infective endocarditis of these valves with aortic ring abscess, rupture of aortic root, and cardiac tamponade.

Paravalvular aortic root abscess with intracardiac fistula formation is an exceedingly rare complication of infective endocarditis. This condition is even more rarely encountered in patients with bioprosthetic valve endocarditis. We report an unusual case of a 68-year-old Bosnian female with a bioprosthetic aortic valve, who developed an extensive aortic root abscess, complicated by an aortico-...

Brucella endocarditis (BE) is a rare but life threatening complication of brucellosis. We present a case report of a patient with relapsing brucellosis complicated with aortic valve endocarditis. The patient underwent valve replacement and required prolonged antibiotic treatment because of rupture of the noncoronary leaflet and development of congestive heart failure. Since the onset of endocar...
