Existing works in automatic generation of interference-free 5-axis surface machining toolpaths bear a serious drawback – in order to avoid the obstacles, the tool is often required to make drastic change in its orientation between neighboring contact points. Such quick change in tool’s orientation can never be made possible in reality due to the stringent physical limit on the speed and acceler...

We present a new method to extract distance and orientation dependent potentials between amino acid side chains using a database of protein structures and the standard Boltzmann device. The importance of orientation dependent interactions is first established by computing orientational order parameters for proteins with a-helical and b-sheet architecture. Extraction of the anisotropic interacti...

The representation of orientation in primary visual cortex (V1) has been examined at a fine spatial scale corresponding to the columnar architecture. We present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements providing evidence for a topographic map of orientation preference in human V1 at a much coarser scale, in register with the angular-position component of the retinotopic map of ...

We develop a method to study the anisotropy of a cosmic-ray angular distribution, using both the right ascension and the declination of the arrival directions. It generalises the full-sky coverage method of Sommers (2001) to partial-sky coverage experiments. When the angular distribution consists of a dipolar modulation of an otherwise isotropic flux, the method allows one to reconstruct the di...

Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is widely used to study microstructural characteristics of the brain. High angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) samples diffusivity at a large number of spherical angles, to better resolve neural fibers that mix or cross. Here, we implemented a framework for advanced mathematical analysis of mouse 5-shell HARDI (b=1000, 3000, 4000, 8000, 12000 s/mm2), al...

Abstract. This paper shows a solution to measure the curvature of a rail-guide in which a robot manipulator moves. Such robot, denominated Roboturb, is destined to welding tasks in rotors of high power hydraulic turbines damaged by cavitation effect. This robot has as mainly characteristics the fact of presenting small load (total mass of 20kg), high mobility level due to its seven degrees of f...

The laser-polarization effects on nonadiabatically coupled π-electron rotation (ring current) and molecular vibration have been theoretically analyzed for aromatic molecules with quasi-degenerate excited states irradiated by an ultrashort laser pulse of arbitrary polarization. We first derived general formulations of the coherent electronic wave packet and expectation value of electronic angula...

Single-wall carbon nanotubes grow along self-assembled nanosteps of annealed miscut C-plane sapphire. Depending on the miscut orientation and annealing conditions, graphoepitaxy leads to the formation of either unprecedentedly straight and parallel nanotubes, with angular deviations as small as +/-0.5 degrees , or to wavy nanotubes loosely conformal to sawtooth-shaped faceted nanosteps.

A novel interest point detector is presented in this paper. It uses a wedge model that characterizes corners by their orientation and angular width. The detector is compared to two popular corner detectors: Harris and SUSAN. It is also shown how widely separated views can be matched, by using the information provided by the detector to approximate local affine transformations between corners.
