The transition from transcription initiation to elongation involves phosphorylation of the large subunit (Rpb1) of RNA polymerase II on the repetitive carboxyl-terminal domain. The elongating hyperphosphorylated Rpb1 is subject to ubiquitination, particularly in response to UV radiation and DNA-damaging agents. By using computer modeling, we identified regions of Rpb1 and the adjacent subunit 6...

The role of DNA repair by nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), homologous recombination, spore photoproduct lyase, and DNA polymerase I and genome protection via alpha/beta-type small, acid-soluble spore proteins (SASP) in Bacillus subtilis spore resistance to accelerated heavy ions (high-energy charged [HZE] particles) and X rays has been studied. Spores deficient in NHEJ and alpha/beta-type SASP...

We evaluated the clonogenic survival, membrane permeability, metabolic activity (XTT reduction), and apoptosis (FLICA binding) of Cryptococcus neoformans cells subjected to gamma rays from an external source, and beta and alpha particles delivered to fungal cells by capsule-specific antibody. We found that gamma, beta, and alpha radiation affected cells through different pathways.

The impact of alpha radiation on cements used to encapsulate intermediate-level waste (ILW) is not well understood. ILW wastes can contain high levels alpha-emitting radionuclides, meaning that the grouts them are exposed significant ionising radiation. Thus, a damaged region could develop in grout adjacent species. This work attempted recreate this behaviour through nonradioactive 4He2+ ion-ac...

Background: : Due to the difficulties of locally obtaining ZnS(Ag), preliminary investigation of the radioluminescence characterization of Zinc oxide (ZnO) for alpha particle detection was performed. Materials and Methods: The scintillation properties of ZnO films were tested using alpha sources                &nbsp...

In this study, calibration process was carried out for deigned new CR-39 nuclear track detector for protons, neutrons and alpha particles separately under the same etching condition. In order to aim this purpose, americium-beryllium standard source (241Am-Be) and Plexiglas phantom for neutron irradiation, brass collimators and americium standard source (241Am) for alpha irradiation and the acce...

Far infrared radiation, a subdivision of the electromagnetic spectrum, is beneficial for long-term tissue healing, anti-inflammatory effects, growth promotion, sleep modulation, acceleration of microcirculation, and pain relief. We investigated if far infrared radiation is beneficial for renal proximal tubule cell cultivation and renal tissue engineering. We observed the effects of far infrared...

PURPOSE With the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided radiation therapy it is becoming increasingly important to consider the potential influence of a magnetic field on ionising radiation. This paper aims to study the effect of a magnetic field on the track structure of radiation to determine if the biological effectiveness may be altered. METHODS Using the Geant4-DNA (GEometry A...

The optimal radiation schedule for the curative treatment of prostate cancer is not known. The dose-response of tumors and normal tissues to fractionated irradiation can be described according to a parameter called the alpha-beta ratio (α/β). In the past several years numerous reports have been published that suggest that the alpha-beta ratio for prostate cancer may be quite low; between 1 and ...
