Severe childhood asthma is a complicated and heterogeneous disorder with distinct phenotypes. Children with severe asthma have more persistent symptoms despite receiving treatment, more atopy, greater airway obstruction, and more air trapping than those with mild-to-moderate asthma. They also have higher morbidity and substantial airflow limitations that persist throughout adulthood. Identifica...

Appearance: The headcheese sign on chest CT is characterized by the juxtaposition of lobular regions of low, normal, and high attenuation.1 This results in 3 (or more) different densities on CT that are sharply demarcated from each other. The abrupt density transitions reflect the margins of secondary pulmonary lobules. Low attenuation lobules almost always reflect air trapping, which can be co...

We suggest a new approach for selective trapping of light absorbing particles in gases by multiple optical bottle-beam-like traps created by volume speckle field. We demonstrate stable simultaneous confinement of a few thousand micro-particles in air with a single lowpower laser beam. The size distribution of trapped particles exhibits a narrow peak near the average size of an optical speckle. ...

Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) is a rare disease that is classically described as presenting with cough, dyspnea, and wheezing in non-smoker middle aged females. Pulmonary function tests commonly demonstrate an obstructive pattern and CT of chest usually reveals diffuse air trapping with mosaic pattern. We present a case of patient with DIPNECH manifestin...

Results Our results shows that these patients end expiratory volume (EEV) increased by 14 +/0.4 % compared to quiet breathing during maximum exercise before surgery (P < 0.002). This dynamic hyperinflation or air trapping during exercise was corrected after surgery. Postoperatively their EEV decreased during maximum exercise by 2.3 +/1.4 % at 5 months respectively (P 0.001). The end inspiratory...

OBJECTIVE The aim of this manuscript is to summarize an approach to the differential diagnosis of the pulmonary complications of illicit drug use based on the computed tomography findings. CONCLUSIONS The various pulmonary complications of illicit drug use result in 5 main patterns of parenchymal abnormality: nodules, ground-glass opacities, consolidation, air trapping, and emphysema. Other t...

A 34 yr old heroin addict was referred because of chest pain caused by air-trapping in a bulla in the left lower lobe. There was a marked difference between the functional residual capacity measured by body-plethysmography and helium dilution. A slow wash-in and wash-out were demonstrated by ventilation scintigraphy with Xenon133. Bullous degeneration is a known complication of intravenous drug...

Received: 04.05.2016; Revised: 24.06.2016; Accepted: 12.10.2016 Fig. 1: HRCT (5 mm sections) scan of the thorax of the patient showing air trapping (red arrows), ground glass opacity with high attenuation (blue arrows) and intervening normal lung (yellow arrow). The lower zones of both lungs are normal (white arrow), typical of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Due to long-standing nature of the di...

We studied the effects ion beam irradiation on carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns. CNT yarn was fabricated by drawing and spinning CNT sheets from a vertically aligned CNT forest. The yarn was irradiated by 2.5 MeV protons in either vacuum or air. Irradiation in air was achieved by directing the proton beam through a 0.025 mm thick Ti window. Irradiation in vacuum occurred at a pressure of <10-6 torr ...

Newly discovered two-dimensional tin, named stanene, has been theoretically predicted and found to have unique electronic properties. Stanene is found to have a buckled structure which could be a key structure against chemical reactivity. Hence, the reactivity of stanene against key air pollutants NO, NO2, SO, SO2, CO, and CO2 is investigated within first principles calculations. The results sh...
