Introduction: The administration of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or ecstasy causes memory impairment, whereas neurogenesis improves memory and learning. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of MDMA on neurogenesis in the hippocampus of male rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats received intraperitoneal (IP) injections of MDMA (10 mg/kg). We assessed nestin, sex-determining regio...

We have previously reported that oxytocin produces an inward current at a holding potential of -70 mV without a change in glutamatergic excitatory transmission in adult male rat spinal lamina II (substantia gelatinosa; SG) neurons that play a pivotal role in regulating nociceptive transmission. Oxytocin also enhanced GABAergic and glycinergic spontaneous inhibitory transmissions in a manner sen...

there are many discrepancies around the effect of sex hormones on spatial learning and memory in rodents. the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of chronic administration of estradiol (es) and testosterone (tes) on spatial memory in adult castrated male rats. cholinesterase activity of the hippocampus in treated animals was also measured to seek if hormonal treatment can ch...

This study was to evaluate the age-dependent effects of caffeine exposure on the long bones and reproductive organs using male rats. A total of 15 immature male rats and 15 young adult male rats were allocated randomly to three groups: a control group and two groups fed caffeine with 120 and 180 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks. Exposure to caffeine at either dose significantly reduced body weight gain; a...

Sex differences were investigated in cholinergic neurons of the septal-diagonal band region of adult rats subjected to neonatal treatment with 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3). Neonatal hyperthyroidism resulted in a 44% increase in specific activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT; EC 2.3.1.6) in adult male rat septal-diagonal band region, whereas no change in ChAT activity could be detected ...

BACKGROUND Ethanol (EtOH) abuse is a major health and economic concern, particularly for females who appear to be more sensitive to the rewarding effects of EtOH. This study compared sex differences to the rewarding and aversive effects of EtOH using place-conditioning procedures in rats. METHODS Separate groups of adult (male, female, ovariectomized [OVX] female) and adolescent (male and fem...

Hepatic histidase activity in adult female rats is twice that in adult male rats. Hypophysectomy and thyroidectomy result in a significant increase in hepatic histidase activities in males, but not in females. This effect on histidase is reversed by the exogenous administration of tri-iodothyronine, but not by ectopic pituitary glands or purified pituitary hormones.
