The PHLIpS (Producing Hands-on Learning to InsPire Students) Method provides a systematic approach for professors desiring to develop active learning activities for their classrooms. Many professors appreciate the benefits of active learning and wish to include more activities in their classroom. Unfortunately, activities for a given topic or course are commonly not available as an off-the-self...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to compare the psychological adjustment of caregivers of children with brain tumors who are on-treatment with caregivers of children who are off-treatment. METHODS Data were collected from 90 participants: 47 (52.2%) caregivers of children undergoing active treatment (on-treatment) and 43 (47.8%) caregivers of children off-treatment on measures of global...

In this study (1) exposure in vivo plus response prevention, (2) cognitive therapy and (3) a waiting-list control condition were compared on their efficacy on the treatment of hypochondriasis. Seventy-eight patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of hypochondriasis were randomly assigned to one of these conditions. Patients in both active treatment conditions improved significantly on all the measures...

Randomization of treatment assignment in experiments generates treatment groups with approximately balanced baseline covariates. However, in observational studies, where treatment assignment is not random, patients in the active treatment and control groups often differ on crucial covariates that are related to outcomes. These covariate imbalances can lead to biased treatment effect estimates. ...

Response to HYVET Ambulatory Blood Pressure Substudy Bursztyn et al1 speculate that our ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) participants were not representative of the whole trial. We agree this is possible but very unlikely in view of the similarity of the participant characteristics given in Table 1. As the elderly frequently nap, he wonders if this would substantially reduce daytime pressure. Ho...

We extend our earlier work on X-ray source stacking in the deep XMM-Newton observation of the Lockman Hole, to the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field North and the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field South. The XMM-Newton work showed the resolved fraction of the X-ray background to be ∼ 80-100 per cent at . 2 keV but this decreased to only ∼ 50 per cent above ∼ 8 keV. The CDF-N and CDF-S probe deeper, and are able to...

The reverse link in-cell and other-cell interference in power controlled cellular CDMA networks determine the reverse link capacity, and thus to a large extent the overall network capacity. A common modeling assumption is that a mobile is power controlled by a sector belonging to a set closest to it (minimum reverse link path-loss sense). However, in an actual IS-95-based system the mobile tran...

Women with recurrent vaginal candidosis were treated until the infection cleared and were then given one clotrimazole 500 mg vaginal tablet a month or an identical placebo as prophylaxis. Of 21 women who received placebo, 16 developed symptoms or signs within three months, compared with nine of 17 women given active treatment. Women who relapsed were treated and then given active prophylaxis on...

One hundred and twenty-eight children, admitted for active treatment of ganglia around the wrist, hand, ankle or foot are reviewed. The methods of treatment are discussed. The most satisfactory results were obtained by excision (7-2% recurrence) and incision with a tenotome (11% recurrence). The overall recurrence rate was 19%. The ganglia around the wrist had the highest rate of recurrence.

For a nonlinear optimal control problem with state constraints, we give conditions under which the optimal control depends Lipschitz continuously in the L2 norm on a parameter. These conditions involve smoothness of the problem data, uniform independence of active constraint gradients, and a coercivity condition for the integral functional. Under these same conditions, we obtain a new nonoptima...
