In This Issue In This Issue Zombie cells ooks can be deceiving—even a cell that appears healthy may be doomed to die. Ekert et al. (page 835) report that cells lacking two important caspases can survive in the short term without a growth factor, but will succumb eventually. Thus, the normal job of these caspases may be to accelerate the dying process rather than control the commitment of cells ...

BACKGROUND Previous studies established that PP1 is a target for Bcl-2 proteins and an important regulator of apoptosis. The two distinct functional PP1 consensus docking motifs, R/Kx((0,1))V/IxF and FxxR/KxR/K, involved in PP1 binding and cell death were previously characterized in the BH1 and BH3 domains of some Bcl-2 proteins. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS In this study, we demonstrate that DPT-AIF(1...

UNLABELLED The balance between apoptosis and proliferation is tipped towards a decrease of apoptosis as the colonocyte progresses in the adenoma to carcinoma sequence of colon carcinogenesis. According to literature data, proteins like p53, Ki-67, APAF-1, Ets-1, PTEN contribute to inhibition of apoptosis and stimulation of proliferation. AIM Considering the complex interference among colorect...

The recent discovery and characterization of Ark, the Drosophila homolog of the mammalian cell-death adaptor protein Apaf-1, have revealed that, like Apaf-1, this protein is important in multiple apoptosis pathways. The new findings also suggest that cell death in flies is very similar to that in mammals after all.

BACKGROUND Inflammation may lead to tissue injury. We have studied the modulation of inflammatory milieu-induced tissue injury, as exemplified by the mesothelium. Peritoneal dialysis is complicated by peritonitis episodes that cause loss of mesothelium. Proinflammatory cytokines are increased in the peritoneal cavity during peritonitis episodes. However there is scarce information on the modula...

PURPOSE Risk stratification of renal cell carcinoma is based on the histopathologic classification. Promoter hypermethylation as a mechanism of gene inactivation in renal cell carcinoma has been shown for only a small number of genes. We examined the usefulness of quantitative methylation analysis with a new set of p53 target genes for determining the clinical outcome and aggressiveness of the ...
