results the stool samples were examined via direct microscopic examination and acid-fast staining. positivity was determined in 129 (5.7%) cases. in the overall assessment of the patients with respect to general body itching, rectal itching, allergy, immunosuppression plus cancer, shortness of breath, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, abdominal pain, salivation, constipation, nausea, vomiting, grow...
Tuberculosis is a systemic disease which involves skeletal and articular system very rarely. Osteoarticular tuberculosis commonly occurs in the vertebral column and more rarely in the sacroiliac joints. In this study, we report a 44-years-old male patient with low-grade fever, malabsorption syndrome, abdominal and pelvic ascites and low-back pain, that underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for identifying t...
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Making centrifuged deposit smears from sputum to detect acid-fast bacilli (AFB) is considered hazardous. We carried out this study to stain the centrifuged deposits with carbol-fuchsin in sputum containers and to decolourize and counterstain their smears made on glass slides. METHODS The centrifuged deposits of 180 sputum samples from pulmonary tuberculosis patients we...
We report a rare case of tuberculosis of oral cavity in a 3.5 year-old male who was referred to oral medicine department with a chief complaint of a painless lesion in the oral cavity. Incisional biopsy from the lesion margin depicted histological features of necrotizing granulomatous lesion. Ziehl-Neelsen staining for acid fast bacilli, interestingly, was negative.
The presence of acid fast bacilli in sputum specimen was investigated comparatively with Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN)and Kinyoun Cold staining (KC) in order to determine sensitivity in detecting Tuberculosis Bacilli (T.B.). This study was employed on patients with severe lower respiratory tract infection to compare between these two stains. Which revealed that Ziehl-Neelsen procedure gives better results...
Collagen detection in histological sections and its quantitative estimation by computer-aided image analysis represent important procedures to assess tissue localization and distribution of connective fibers. Different histochemical approaches have been proposed to detect and quantify collagen deposition in paraffin slices with different degrees of satisfaction. The present study was performed ...
We report an unusual case of Mycobacterium peregrinum bacteremia and infection of an automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator that was originally misidentified as a Nocardia sp. due, in part, to its partially acid-fast staining characteristic, morphology, and odor. The misdiagnosis had a direct effect on patient care, though the patient was subsequently successfully treated.
OBJECTIVE Reflexive testing of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens with Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) and acid-fast bacillus (AFB) stains is not routinely performed by most institutions. Instead, these stains are usually ordered to evaluate for the presence of fungal elements and/or acid-fast organisms if initial histopathologic assessment suggests the presence of these pathogens. Our inst...
OBJECTIVES Ancillary molecular testing on tissue is available for mycobacterial disease; however, judicious use of highly sensitive tests, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing, should be guided by histologic parameters. We sought to investigate the utility of performing acid-fast stains (AFS) on skin biopsy specimens with granulomatous inflammation without an otherwise obvious...
