Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae GB30 is an aerobic, motile, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming rod that can exist as a soil saprophyte or as a legume microsymbiont of Pisum sativum. GB30 was isolated in Poland from a nodule recovered from the roots of Pisum sativum growing at Janow. GB30 is also an effective microsymbiont of the annual forage legumes vetch and pea. Here we describe the feature...

Phytoremediation is one of the cleanup methods of polluted soil that is possible accumulation of heavy metals in plant tissues, exclusion of these elements from contaminated soil. Therefore, to achievement the objective, this research was done in pot culture using completely randomized design at the University of Birjand in 2011. Two species Spinacia oleracea and Lepidium sativum were used to r...

Studies with stem segments of peas (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska) suggest that the pH of the medium bathing elongating tissue does not always reflect intramural (cell wall) conditions or that pH is not a controlling factor in elongation. Peeled, green segments, and peeled or nonpeeled etiolated segments appear to regulate the pH of their bathing medium causing it to become acidified with or wit...

We analyze how temporal variability in local demography and dispersal combine to affect the rate of spread of an invading species. Our model combines state-structured local demography (specified by an integral or matrix projection model) with general dispersal distributions that may depend on the state of the individual or its parent. It allows very general patterns of stationary temporal varia...

In a study of the effect of soil bacteria upon the etching power of the roots of Canada field peas upon polished marble, it has been shown that the presence of the bacteria increases the etching power of the roots.

A number of national and international policy processes are underway to allow for the development of sui generis systems to protect local natural and genetic resources and related knowledge about their management, use and maintenance. Despite agreements reached on paper at international and national levels, such as the Nagoya Protocol on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sh...

A study was conducted to check the effect of different sowing dates and row spacing on the growth, seed yield and quality of offseason pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Climax). Significant differences were recorded among sowing dates for days to germination while nonsignificant results were found for row spacing and interaction (A × B). Maximum days to germination were recorded in D1 (20 th April) and...

Renaturation of pea (Pisum sativum) DNA has been used to estimate the size of the pea genome and the fraction of pea DNA containing repeated DNA sequences. Pea DNA renaturation and single copy tracer renaturation indicate that the size of the pea genome is 0.5 picograms. More than 70% of pea DNA sequences are repeated from 100 to 5,000 times.

Sexual selection favors strategies that enhance the fertilization chances of sperm donors, and sexual conflict can ensue when these adaptations negatively affect sperm recipients (Arnqvist and Rowe 2005). Such conflict often causes counteradaptive coevolution that can result in bizarre mating behaviors in separate-sex (Arnqvist and Rowe 2005) and hermaphroditic species (Michiels and Newman 1998...
