The thermal stability of siderite (FeCO(3)) was studied by two independent methods in which the oxygen fugacity of the gas phase was controlled by equilibration with graphite. Both series of experiments indicate that siderite decomposes stably to magnetite + graphite between 455 degrees and 465 degrees C at 500 to 2000 bars PCO2 + P(CO).

We report on lasing action from colonies of Escherichia coli bacteria that are genetically programmed to synthesize the green fluorescent protein (GFP). When embedded in a Fabry-Perot type cavity and excited by ns-pulses of blue light (465 nm), the bacteria generate green laser emission (∼520 nm). Broad illumination of pump light yields simultaneous lasing over a large area in bacterial colonies.

We map the Eigen model of biological evolution [Naturwissenschaften 58, 465 (1971)] into a quantum spin model with non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Based on such a connection, we derive exact relaxation periods for the Eigen model to approach static energy landscape from various initial conditions. We also study a simple case of dynamic fitness function.

We report efficient amplification of weak femtosecond supercontinuum pulses by a stimulated Raman scattering process in pressurized H(2) gas excited with 350-fs-duration frequency-doubled pulses from a regenerativeamplified Ti:sapphire laser. An amplification factor of 10(9) is obtained at the wavelength of 465 nm for seed pulses produced by supercontinuum generation in glass.

Mechanistic studies of H2O2 activation by complexes related to [(BPMEN)Fe(II)(CH3CN)2](2+) with electron-rich pyridines revealed that a new intermediate formed in the presence of acetic acid with a 465 nm visible band can be associated with an unusual g = 2.7 EPR signal. We postulate that this chromophore is an acylperoxoiron(III) intermediate.
