Killer plasmids pGKL1 and pGKL2 of double-stranded linear DNAs were transferred from Kluyveromyces lactis to strains of Kluyveromyces fragilis and Candida pseudotropicalis. The resultant killer strains produced 17-fold and 6-fold larger amounts of killer toxin than K. lactis did, respectively. The killer toxin produced by each species appeared to be a glycoprotein.

Twelve 16S-23S ribosomal DNA intergenic spacer (ITS-PCR) types were identified among 57 Staphylococcus intermedius isolates from humans and other animals. Six ITS-PCR types were host specific, and most human and canine strains belonged to the same types (A and J). Pigeon, horse, and mink strains appeared more heterogeneous.

A ruthenium red-staining capsule was observed on two pathogenic strains, but not on one nonpathogenic strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The capsule appeared to mediate cytadsorption of mycoplasmas to the chicken tracheal epithelium without evidence of membrane fusion.
