This paper investigates the role of electrode– dielectric interactions, and barrier materials on leakage current, breakdown voltage, yield and reliability of thinfilm (Ba,Sr)TiO3 capacitors on silicon and glass substrates. The first part of the paper investigates the electrode–dielectric interactions with sputtered Cu and Ni electrodes to identify the mechanisms that lead to high leakage curren...

Most large-scale applications of high-critical-temperature superconductors will require wires or tapes that can carry large current in applied magnetic fields. This report describes research and development efforts at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) aimed at producing practical superconducting components and devices using the Y-Ba-Cu-O and Bi-(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O systems. Topics discussed include ...

Motivated by recent experiments on (Sr,Ca,La) 14 Cu 24 O 41 , a two–dimensional Ising antiferromagnet with mobile, locally pinned and quenched defects is introduced and analysed using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. The interplay between the arrangement of the defects and the magnetic ordering as well as the effect of an external field are studied.

We report how the thermopower of complex transition-metal oxides is susceptible to small changes in material parameters. In the A-site ordered perovskite oxide R(2/3)Cu(3)Ti(3.6)Ru(0.4)O(12), the thermopower changes from 15 to -100 microV K(-1) at 300 K in going from R = La to Er. We associate this with the hybridization between Cu 3d and Ru 4d electrons, which depends on R. For stronger hybrid...

The concentrations of specific elements in the equine liver and kidneys are of practical relevance since horses are not only food-producing animals, but also partially serve as an indicator for the environmental pollution, as the basic feed includes plants like grass, grain and fruits. In this study, the concentrations of strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), mangan...

This study is aimed at assessing atmospheric deposition of heavy metals using the epiphytic moss genera Fabronia ciliaris collected from six urban sites in the Metropolitan Zone of the Toluca Valley in Mexico. The concentrations of K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, and Pb were determined by total reflection X-ray fluorescence technique. Results show that the average metal concentrat...

J. Entomol. Sci. 25(3): 439-449 (July 1990) ABSTRACT There is a paucity of information that describes the relationship between the suite of nutrient elements in tree foliage and associated arthropod assemblages. Foliage from chestnut oak (Quercus prinus), hickories (Carya spp.), yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), red maple (Acer rubrum), and flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) and associat...

Commercial talcs are pulverized mineral products with a variable chemical and mineralogic composition, widely used in industry. Although generally white, they have color variations. The aim of this study was to establish relationships between color parameters and the chemical and mineralogic composition of commercial talc samples, in order to investigate the causes of color. Chlorite, dolomite,...

Every infection is a battle for trace elements. Neutrophils migrate first to the infection site and accumulate quickly to high numbers. They fight pathogens by phagocytosis and intracellular toxication. Additionally, neutrophils form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) to inhibit extracellular microbes. Yet, neutrophil trace element characteristics are largely unexplored. We investigated unst...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, Rb, Cs, Sr and Ba in the muscles of red deer that were hunted in two regions of Poland (south-western and north-eastern). The data obtained were evaluated with regards to benefits and potential risk to consumers' health. Samples for the investigations were collected in 2008 and 2009 from 50 female red deer, and the metal co...
