Understanding of the elastic pressure/volume (Pel/V) curve is still limited in health and disease. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the Pel/V curve and elastance of the respiratory system (ERS) lung (EL) and chest wall (ECW) in healthy pigs. Six young (20.8 kg) and seven adult (58.9 kg), anaesthetized, paralysed and ventilated pigs were studied. Pel/V curves were recorded at zero e...

This paper presents a new pel recursive motion compensated prediction algorithm for video coding applications. The derivation of the algorithm is based on Recursive Least Squares (RLS) estimation that minimizes the mean square prediction error for each pel (picture element). A comparison with the modified Steepest-descent gradient estimation algorithm shows significant improvement in terms of m...

In order to reduce the bit rate of video signals, the standardized coding techniques apply motion-compensated prediction in combination with transform coding of the prediction error. By mathematical analysis, it is shown that aliasing components are deteriorating the prediction efficiency. In order to compensate the aliasing, two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional interpolation filters are...

Pectates lyase (Pel) plays an important role in bacteria pathogenicity. The crystal structure of Pel from Acidovorax citrulli (AcPel) has been solved to 1.37 Å resolution. AcPel belongs to the polysaccharide lyase family 1 (PL1), which has a characteristic right-handed β-helix fold. AcPel is similar with other Pels in the PL1 family, but also shows some differences at the substrate binding site.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare aggressive subset of non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma. It is caused by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus type 8 (KSHV/HHV8). It occurs mainly, but not exclusively, in HIV-positive patients. PEL predominantly develops in serous cavities and occasionally in extracavitary regions. PEL carries a very poor prognosis with a median survival ti...

The nonmonotonic formalism of partial equilibrium logic (PEL) was introduced and studied in [1,2] and proposed as a logical foundation for the partial stable and well-founded semantics of logic programs. Here we study further logical properties of PEL and some techniques to compute partial equilibrium models.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma with poor prognosis caused by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Previous studies have revealed that HIF-1α, which mediates much of the cellular response to hypoxia, plays an important role in life cycle of KSHV. KSHV infection promotes HIF-1α activity, and several KSHV genes are in turn activated by HIF-1α. In this s...

BACKGROUND Phyllanthus emblica L (PEL), a well-known medical plant, has been used in Asian countries for a long time. Increasing evidence suggests that it can prevent the tumorigenesis of cancer associated with nonresolving inflammation. However, the possible anti-inflammatory mechanism responsible for preventing tumorigenesis of precancerous lung lesions is not well elucidated. MATERIALS AND...

RNA interference (RNAi) has been suggested to represent a promising therapeutic approach in different disease settings. Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a plasmablastic lymphoma consistently expressing B lymphocyte-induced maturation protein 1 (Blimp-1), a pivotal transcriptional regulator during terminal differentiation of B cells into plasma cells. Here we report, for the first time, that t...
