We present the first results from a 40 ks Guaranteed Time XMM-Newton pointing in the Pleiades. We detect almost all early–mid dM members in the field and several very low mass (VLM) stars – including the brown dwarf (BD) candidate Roque 9 – and investigate the variation of X-ray activity levels, hardness ratios and flare frequency with spectral type down to the BD regime.

Only a few solar-type main-sequence stars are known to be orbited by warm dust particles; the most extreme is the G0 field star BD +20 307 that emits 4% of its energy at mid-infrared wavelengths. We report the identification of a similarly dusty star HD 23514, an F6-type member of the Pleiades. A strong mid-IR silicate emission feature indicates the presence of small warm dust particles, but wi...

I present the results of a programme to monitor the strengths of the Li I 6708Å, K I 7699Å and chromospheric Hα lines in a group of cool Pleiades stars. Consistent instrumentation and analysis techniques are used to show that there is no Li I variability on timescales of 1 year that could possibly account for the apparent spread in Li abundances seen in Pleiades stars between effective temperat...

1098-4402= Advanced high-brightness beam applications such as inverse-Compton scattering (ICS) depend on achieving of ultrasmall spot sizes in high current beams. Modern injectors and compressors enable the production of high-brightness beams having needed short bunch lengths and small emittances. Along with these beam properties comes the need to produce tighter foci, using stronger, shorter f...

Stellar models with masses ranging from 0.5 to 1:3 M were constructed in order to compare to young cluster observations of Li and of rotation velocities. The amount of Li depletion in cool stars is sensitive to the amount of overshoot at the base of the surface convection zone, and the exact metallicity of the models. Even when this uncertainty is taken into account, the Li observations are a s...

We present results from two deep ROSAT HRI exposures on the Blanco 1 open cluster. Blanco 1 is one of the few open clusters at large distance from the Galactic Plane. This circumstance has suggested that it may have formed through a mechanism different from that responsible for the other nearby clusters. The age of Blanco 1 is rather uncertain since, depending on the adopted age indicator, it r...
