The first step in audition is a deflection of the sensory hair bundle that opens mechanically gated channels, depolarizing the sensory hair cells. Two mechanism of adaptation of mechano-electric transducer (MET) channels have been identified in turtle auditory hair cells. The rate of fast adaptation varies tonotopically and is postulated to underlie a mechanical tuning mechanism in turtle audit...

Per-trochanteric (4 Part) fractures of femur are commonest in elderly people. The incidence is expected to increase in the coming years, with an ageing population resulting in a greater number of traumatic injuries in patients with osteoporotic bone. DHS fixation is gold standard modality for treatment of such fractures. Various implants used for such fractures are 1) DHS Sliding compression sc...

'Dropped head syndrome' (DHS) is characterized by severe weakness of the muscles of the back of the neck, resulting in chin-on-chest deformity. Dropped head syndrome induced by radiotherapy is very rare. We report a case of DHS following chemoradiotherapy with a total of 64.8 Gy in 36 fractions for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

AbstractDapsone is a bactericidal and bacteriostatic against Mycobacterium leprae, a causative agent of leprosy. Dapsone is also applied in a range of medical fields because of its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. Dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) is a rare yet serious adverse drug reaction (ADR) caused by dapsone involving multiple organs. We performed a systematic review ...

In this retrospective study, we examine the impact that Background employing a permanent derotation screw (DRS) has on the rate of revision for 2-hole dynamic hip screws (DHS, a.k.a. sliding hip screws), used for internal fixation of intracapsular neck of femur (NOF) fractures. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to examine the impact of using a derotation screw on DHS revision rate....

OBJECTIVES Pulse pressure (PP) is a measure of large artery stiffness and has been shown to be an important predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aims of the present study were to investigate the heritability of PP in three studies, the Diabetes Heart Study (DHS), the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Family Study (IRAS FS), and the NHLBI Family Heart Study (FHS), to estimat...

Doubled haploids (DHs) are essential founders for breeding via isogenic line production. We determined the optimal timing of first and second (HST1 HST2) double heat shock treatment DH production in willow gudgeon (Gnathopogon caerulescens). Gynogenesis was induced by fertilisation with UV-irradiated sperm (20 mJ/cm2). Each HST performed at 40.5°C 1 min. In experiment I, HST1 applied 23–31 min ...

BACKGROUND Adolescent pregnancy has significant health and socio-economic consequences for women, their families and communities. Efforts to prevent too-early pregnancy rely on accurate information about adolescents' knowledge, behaviours and access to family planning, however available data are limited in some settings. Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) reports are recognised as providing na...

Silybin or silibinin, a flavonolignan isolated from Milk thistle seeds, is one of the popular dietary supplements and has been extensively studied for its antioxidant, hepatoprotective and anti-cancer properties. We have envisioned that potency of silybin could be further enhanced through suitable modification/s in its chemical structure. Accordingly, here, we synthesized and characterized a se...

In rat spinal cord slice repetitive electrical stimulation of the dorsal root at an intensity that activates C-fibers evokes a slow-to-develop and prolonged (30-50 sec) change in light transmittance (OISDR) in the superficial part of the ipsilateral dorsal horn (DHs). Inhibition of astrocyte metabolism (by bath-applied 400 μM fluoroacetate and 200 μM glutamine; FAc+Gln) or interference with gli...
