Helicobacter pylori infection in human is one of the most common infections worldwide. However, the origin and transmission of this bacterium has not been clearly explained. One of the suggested theories is transmission via water. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of H. pylori in tap water, dental units' water, and bottled mineral water in Iran. In the present study, tot...

We report the enzyme-like reversible amination of four intermediates pertinent to the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle on a photo-irradiated surface of mineral sphalerite (ZnS). Given its prevalence in the waters of early Earth, we suggest that the mineral-based photochemistry might have catalyzed the homeostasis of prebiotic metabolic systems.

In 1951 William Addison began his history of the English spa by noting that the vast literature on the medical and chemical properties of mineral waters "would as effectively defy analysis as the waters themselves, apparently, invite it" .' Addison, like most later historians, chose to see the spa mainly as a phenomenon of social history, of changes in manners, morals, and amusements.2 Yet our ...

The presence of Escherichia coli in drinking water is an indication of fecal contamination and can represent a risk of waterborne diseases. Forty-nine E. coli strains isolated from different sources of drinking water (distribution system, well, spring and mineral water) were placed into the phylogenetic groups A (15 strains), B1 (19 strains), B2 (2 strains) and D (13 strains). Approximately 30%...

PURPOSE This study compared the effects of a mineral water rich in calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and sulfate and a marketed mineral water with a composition similar to that of urban water on the lipid profile of dyslipidemic adults. METHODS In a randomized controlled trial, 32 adults received one liter of "rich mineral water" daily for one month, and 37 adults drank the same amount of norm...

In this study, we reported the effect of frequency on the electrical parameter and permittivity of water samples using an invasive capacitive sensor. The measured capacitance, resistance and dissipation factor for distilled water, mineral water, tap water and salt water for different frequency is reported and results compared. Comparison of the measured capacitances for water samples shows a de...

Background:  The insecticide susceptibility status of Anopheles funestus, one of the main malaria vectors in the Afrotropical regions, remains under-studied due to the difficulty of working with this mosquito species. Collecting their larvae in natural breeding sites, rearing and maintaining them in normal laboratory conditions have been a difficult task. Forced-egg laying technique has been a ...

The kinetic method is based on a catalytic effect on the oxidation of sodium pyrogallol-5-sulfonate by hydrogenperoxide. The reaction is followed spectrophotometrically at 436.8 nm. The kinetic parameters of the reaction are reported and a rate equation is suggested. The calibration graph is linear in the range 10-200 ng cm(-3). The effects of certain foreign ions upon the reaction rate were de...

Consumption of dietary carotenoids or carotenoid supplements can alter the color (yellowness) of human skin through increased carotenoid deposition in the skin. As fruit and vegetables are the main dietary sources of carotenoids, skin yellowness may be a function of regular fruit and vegetable consumption. However, most previous studies have used tablets or capsules to supplement carotenoid int...
