The electronic structures of two mixed valence insulators YbB6 and YbB12 are studied by using the local density approximation supplemented with the Gutzwiller method and dynamic mean field theory. YbB6 is found to be a moderately correlated Z2 topological insulator, similar to SmB6 but having much larger bulk band gap. Notably, YbB12 is revealed to be in a new novel quantum state, strongly corr...

This work describes a cryogenic, electro-optically -switched Yb:YAG laser that generates 114-W average TEM power with 47% optical-to-optical efficiency. Pulse repetition frequency is 5 kHz, pulse duration is 16 ns full-width at half-maximum, and is less than 1.05.

We demonstrate a probabilistic entangling quantum gate between two distant trapped ytterbium ions. The gate is implemented between the hyperfine "clock" state atomic qubits and mediated by the interference of two emitted photons carrying frequency encoded qubits. Heralded by the coincidence detection of these two photons, the gate has an average output state fidelity of 89+/-2%. This entangling...

The anomalous behavior of YbInCu4 and similar compounds is modeled by the exact solution of the spin one-half Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions. The valence-fluctuating transition is related to a metal-insulator transition caused by the Falicov-Kimball interaction, and triggered by the change in the f-occupancy.

Athermal lasers dispose of their waste heat in the form of spontaneous fluorescence (i.e., by laser cooling) to avoid warming the medium. The thermodynamics of this process is discussed both qualitatively and quantitatively from the point of view of the first and second laws. The steady-state optical dynamics of an ytterbium-doped KGd(WO4)2 fiber is analyzed as a model radiation-balanced solid-...

The TupABC system is involved in the cellular uptake of tungsten and belongs to the ABC (ATP binding cassette)-type transporter systems. The TupA component is a periplasmic protein that binds tungstate anions, which are then transported through the membrane by the TupB component using ATP hydrolysis as the energy source (the reaction catalyzed by the ModC component). We report the heterologous ...

ModA, the periplasmic-binding protein of the Escherichia coli mod transport system was overexpressed and purified. Binding of molybdate and tungstate to ModA was found to modify the UV absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of the protein. Titration of these changes showed that ModA binds molybdate and tungstate in a 1:1 molar ratio. ModA showed an intrinsic fluorescence emission spectrum...

REAu4Al8Si (RE = Ce-Gd, and Yb) is the end member of a new series of intermetallic structures grown from aluminium flux; this new structure contains thick AuAl2 slabs and the ytterbium analog exhibits mixed-valent behavior.

Lifetimes of twenty-one excited states in atomic Yb were measured using time-resolved fluorescence detection following pulsed laser excitation. The lifetime of the 4f145d6s D1 state, which is of particular importance for a proposed study of parity nonconservation in atoms, was measured to be 380(30) ns.
