We demonstrate the use of photonic-crystal fiber for dispersion compensation in a soliton fiber laser. The anomalous dispersion provided by the photonic-crystal fiber enables us to construct a femtosecond .ber laser at 1 microm wavelength without prisms or diffraction gratings. The laser produces ~100-fs pulses with 1 nJ energy, and is a major step toward environmentally-stable all-fiber device...

The incommensurate palmierite-like structure of beta-K5Yb(MoO4)4, potassium ytterbium tetramolydate, has been refined in the (3 + 1)-dimensional monoclinic superspace group X2/m(0rho0)00, with X = [0 0 0 0; (1/2) (1/2) 0 0; 0 0 (1/2) (1/2); (1/2) (1/2) (1/2) (1/2)] and the unit-cell parameters a = 10.4054 (16), b = 6.1157 (12), c = 19.7751 (18) A, beta = 136.625 (10) degrees ; q = 0.6354 (30)b*...

Spin-polarizedmetastable atoms of ultracold ytterbium are trapped at high density and their inelastic collisional properties are measured. We reveal that in collisions of Yb(P2) with Yb(S0) there is relatively weak inelastic loss, but with a significant spin dependence consistent with Zeeman sublevel changes as being the dominant decay process. This is in strong contrast to our observations of ...

An effective synthetic strategy is demonstrated for preparing highly ordered crystallized mesoporous TiO(2) by introducing rare earth in the synthesis process; the obtained product exhibits near-infrared photocatalytic activity.

Pump pulse duration is shown to determine the maximum efficiency of the up conversion process in ytterbium, thulium co-doped fluoride crystals through its role in determining the emitter temperature reached. We show that up-conversion efficiencies should only be measured when using the same pumping conditions as would be used in a proposed application and that thermal management of the up conve...

We present Ytterbium-doped CaF2 as a laser active material with good prospects for high-power operation in thin-disk laser configuration owing to its favorable thermal properties. Thanks to its broad emission bandwidth the material is also suitable for the generation of ultra-short pulses. The properties of the crystal as well as the challenges related to the coating, polishing, mounting and ha...

The effect of a 1070-nm continuous and pulsed wave ytterbium fiber laser on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae single cells is investigated over a time span of 4 to 5 h. The cells are subjected to optical traps consisting of two counterpropagating plane wave beams with a uniform flux along the x, y axis. Even at the lowest continuous power investigated-i.e., 0.7 mW-the growth of S. cerevisi...

The Stark shift due to blackbody radiation (BBR) is the key factor limiting the performance of many atomic frequency standards, with the BBR environment inside the clock apparatus being difficult to characterize at a high level of precision. Here we demonstrate an in-vacuum radiation shield that furnishes a uniform, well-characterized BBR environment for the atoms in an ytterbium optical lattic...

The spectra of plasmas produced by focusing the output of a Q-switched ruby laser (output I J) on the rare-earth metals have been studied. From samarium (Z = 62) to ytterbium (Z = 70), strong quasi-uniform continua are emitted in the wavelength range 40-2000 A. Line emission from the target elements is absent over most of this wavelength region, particularly below about 600 A. The use of these ...

We report on a tunable all-fiber dissipative-soliton laser with a multimode interference filter that consists of a multimode fiber spliced between two single-mode fibers. By carefully selecting the fiber parameters, a filter with a central wavelength at 1032 nm and a bandwidth of 7.6 nm is constructed and used for spectral filtering in an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber ...
