In this paper, an ultra-wideband, wide angle and polarization-insensitive metasurface is designed, fabricated, and characterized for suppressing the specular electromagnetic wave reflection or backward radar cross section (RCS). Square ring structure is chosen as the basic meta-atoms. A new physical mechanism based on size adjustment of the basic meta-atoms is proposed for ultra-wideband manipu...

This paper investigates point-to-point information transmission over a wideband slow-fading channel, modeled as an (asymptotically) large number of independent identically distributed parallel channels, with the random channel fading realizations remaining constant over the entire coding block. On the one hand, in the wideband limit the minimum achievable energy per nat required for reliable tr...

In this paper, Ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access relay channel with correlated noises at the relay and receiver is investigated. We obtain outer and inner bounds for the IEEE 802.15.3a UWB multiple access relay channel, and also, a diversity gain bound. Finally, we evaluate some results numerically and show that noise correlation coefficients play important role in determining relay position.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate wideband amplification and non-linear frequency compression (NLFC) as a means to improve speech recognition for children with mild/moderate hearing loss. DESIGN Randomized within-subject design with repeated measures across test conditions. STUDY SAMPLE Eleven children with mild to moderate hearing loss were evaluated with: (1) Phonak BTE without NLFC, (2) Phonak BTE w...

Ultra wideband (UWB) wireless communication has been the subject of extensive research in recent years due to its potential applications and unique capabilities. However, many important aspects of UWB-based communication systems have not yet been thoroughly examined. The area of narrow band communication is well developed. The objective of this paper is to present Ultra Wideband (UWB) communica...

Wideband Phased Array Antennas and Compact Harmonic-Suppressed Microstrip Filters. (December 2006) Wen-Hua Tu, B.S., National Chiao Tung University; M.S., National Taiwan University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kai Chang Modern satellite, wireless communications, and radar systems often demand wideband performance for multi-channel and multi-function operations. Among these applications, ph...

The restricted audio quality of today’s telephone networks is mainly due to the narrowband (NB) limitation to the frequency range from about 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz. Meanwhile, codecs for wideband (WB) telephony (50 Hz to 7 kHz) exist with significantly improved speech intelligibility and naturalness. However, the broad introduction of wideband speech coding will require strong efforts of both networ...

A system for bandwidth extension of telephone speech, aided by data embedding, is presented. The proposed system uses the transmitted analog narrowband speech signal as a carrier of the side information needed to carry out the bandwidth extension. The upper band of the wideband speech is reconstructed at the receiving end from two components: a synthetic wideband excitation signal, generated fr...

In this paper, we propose a novel direction of arrival (DOA) estimation method for wideband signals with sensor arrays. The proposed method splits the wideband array output into multiple frequency sub-channels and estimates the signal parameters using a digital channelization receiver. Based on the output sub-channels, a channelization-based incoherent signal subspace method (Channelization-ISM...

Marinemammals have developed highly effective sonar systems for detecting, identifying, and following underwater objects. In this paper we demonstrate that bio-inspired wideband sonar offers great capability for tracking cables on the seafloor. The analysis of biological signals, including dolphin clicks, suggests two approaches. The first is to use a wideband signal, integrating the response o...
